Question about Apple MacBook Pro with 17" Display

I've been getting pop-up windows that say I am prevented from opening or changing documents/files due to lack of authorization or permission. I am the owner of and only person using this computer. How can I not be authorized or permitted to access or alter docs files or folders?

I am not sure if the documents or files that you are opening or changing are from attachments sent to you via email or not, but I can suggest that you can try this step:

Right click on one of the affected files and select Get Info.

This will open a long narrow box providing detailed information of the document.

Now look at the bottom of the window under Sharing & Permissions

Click the padlock and enter your User Admin password when the pop up window appears.

This will allow you access to changing the current permissions of this document.

Make sure you see permissions for "Read and Write" attached to your user name.

If you do, then go ahead and close this window. However, if you see only Read permissions attached to your user, then change that to Read and Write.

Once you have done this, close this Get Info window.

Try to launch that affect document to see if it opens now. If it does then this may be a permissions issue that is affecting your documents and files.

Whether you can or not, I would still recommend you still run this procedure below in order to try and fix this permissions issue.

Now run Disk Utility to repair all permissions on your Mac OS X volume.

Go to Finder Menu bar
• Click Go > Utilities > Disk Utility and open up Disk Utility app.
• Click on Macintosh HD volume (or on the name you have changed this volume to.)
• Select "Repair Disk Permissions"
**Let Disk Utilities run this repair permissions until completion

Once Disk Utility is complete and there are no errors in red in the completion summary (if there are errors listed in red, re-run Disk Utility to see if those error will clear- if they don't reply back to this post right away and let me know what the exact error message is), quit Disk Utility.

• Now attempt once again to access the affected documents and files and see if you are able to access these items now.

How can I get permission to copy file from computer to my external hard drive


You should be able to copy and paste, or simply drag the file to the external hard drive (to make a copy).

Right click on the file, then select 'Copy'. Navigate to your external hard drive and then click 'Paste' to copy the file into it.

If you're talking about something like a word document you may have to change the permissions. To change the permissions right click on the file and then choose PROPERTIES. Change the properties if need be (the permissions..)

How to take ownership of a folder and Grant permissions in Win 7?


Summary:
Windows 7 has implemented addition security mechanism to prevent accidental or intentional file or folder modification by not allowing users other then owner of file or folder to access it. Hence incase if you need to access, modify or delete such files or folder you need to take ownership first then assign rights or permission to respective users. Here is Guide on How to take Ownership and Grant Permission in Window 7.

  1. Locate the file or folder on which you want to take ownership in windows explorer.
  2. Right click on file or folder and select “Properties” from Context Menu.
  3. Click on Security tab.

  5. Now click on Owner tab in Advance Security Settings for User windows.

  6. Click on Edit Button and select user from given Change Owner to list if user or group is not in given list then click on other users or groups. Enter name of user/group and click ok.

Once you have taken the ownership of file or folder next part comes is Granting Permissions to that file/folder or object.
How to Grant Permissions in Windows 7?
  1. Locate the file or folder on which you want to take ownership in windows explorer.
  2. Right click on file or folder and select “Properties” from Context Menu.
  3. Click on Edit button in Properties windows Click ok to confirm UAC elevation request.
  4. Select user/group from permission windows or click add to add other user or group.
  5. Now under Permission section check the rights which you want to grant i.e check “Full Control” under the “Allow” column to assign full access rights control permissions to Administrators group.

Now you can access files of folder in windows 7 with full permissions and take full control.

if it is windows check your "uac" permissions

if is linux like OS check your sudo permissions and also check the access permission of the file

ls -all --- to list files
chmod ---- to change the file permissions
./file --- to execute the binary

Change the "target" folder to your 'My Documents' folder, since Windows gives you permission to write into that folder.

How can i set up network file sharing


First step is to check if the file sharing option is checked in my computer folder options.

Start- My computer- TOOLS - FOLDER OPTIONS- and click on the second tab VIEW- scroll down to the last option which will show as USE SIMPLE FILE SHARING.

Level 1: My Documents (Private) loadTOCNode(3, 'moreinformation'); The owner of the file or folder has read and write permission to the file or folder. Nobody else may read or write to the folder or the files in it. All subfolders that are contained in a folder that is marked as private remain private unless you change the parent folder permissions.

If you are a Computer Administrator and create a user password for your account by using the User Accounts Control Panel tool, you are prompted to make your files and folder private.

Note The option to make a folder private (Level 1) is available only to a user account in its own My Documents folder.

To configure a folder and all the files in it to Level 1, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the folder, and then click Sharing and Security.
  2. Select the Make this Folder Private check box, and then click OK.
Local NTFS Permissions:
  • Owner: Full Control
  • System: Full Control
Network Share Permissions:
  • Not Shared
Level 2 (Default): My Documents (Default) loadTOCNode(3, 'moreinformation'); The owner of the file or folder and local Computer Administrators have read and write permission to the file or folder. Nobody else may read or write to the folder or the files in it. This is the default setting for all the folders and files in each user's My Documents folder.

To configure a folder and all the files in it to Level 2, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the folder, and then click Sharing and Security.
  2. Make sure that both the Make this Folder Private and the Share this folder on the network check boxes are cleared, and then click OK.
Local NTFS Permissions:
  • Owner: Full Control
  • Administrators: Full Control
  • System: Full Control
Network Share Permissions:
  • Not Shared
Level 3: Files in shared documents available to local users loadTOCNode(3, 'moreinformation'); Files are shared with users who log on to the computer locally. Local Computer Administrators can read, write, and delete the files in the Shared Documents folder. Restricted Users can only read the files in the Shared Documents folder. In Windows XP Professional, Power Users may also read, write, or delete any files in the Shared Documents Folder. The Power Users group is available only in Windows XP Professional. Remote users cannot access folders or files at Level 3. To allow remote users to access files, you must share them out on the network (Level 4 or 5).

To configure a file or a folder and all the files in it to Level 3, start Microsoft Windows Explorer, and then copy or move the file or folder to the Shared Documents folder under My Computer.

Local NTFS Permissions:
  • Owner: Full Control
  • Administrators: Full Control
  • Power Users: Change
  • Restricted Users: Read
  • System: Full Control
Network Share Permissions:
  • Not Shared
Level 4: Shared on the Network (Read-Only) loadTOCNode(3, 'moreinformation'); Files are shared for everyone to read on the network. All local users, including the Guest account, can read the files. But they cannot modify the contents. Any user can read and change your files.

To configure a folder and all the files in it to Level 4, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the folder, and then click Sharing and Security.
  2. Click to select the Share this folder on the network check box
  3. Click to clear the Allow network users to change my files check box, and then click OK.
Local NTFS Permissions:
  • Owner: Full Control
  • Administrators: Full Control
  • System: Full Control
  • Everyone: Read
Network Share Permissions:
  • Everyone: Read
Level 5: Shared on the network (Read and Write) loadTOCNode(3, 'moreinformation'); This level is the most available and least secure access level. Any user (local or remote) can read, write, change, or delete a file in a folder shared at this access level. We recommend that this level be used only for a closed network that has a firewall configured. All local users including the Guest account can also read and modify the files.

To configure a folder and all the files in it to Level 5, follow these steps:
  1. Right-click the folder, and then click Sharing and Security
  2. Click to select the Share this folder on the network check box, and then click OK.
Local NTFS Permissions:
  • Owner: Full Control
  • Administrators: Full Control
  • System: Full Control
  • Everyone: Change
Network Share Permissions:
  • Everyone: Full Control
Note All NTFS permissions that refer to Everyone include the Guest account.

All the levels that this article describes are mutually exclusive. Private folders (Level 1) cannot be shared unless they are no longer private. Shared folders (Level 4 and 5) cannot be made private until they are unshared.

If you create a folder in the Shared Documents folder (Level 3), share it on the network, and then allow network users to change your files (Level 5), the permissions for Level 5 are effective for the folder, the files in that folder, and the subfolders. The other files and folders in the Shared Documents folder remain configured at Level 3.

I am unable to print pdf documents on my Image Class d880 printer. I used to be able to...but am not able to anymore. Any reason why this is happening?


Maybe your pdf is protected by print password, in this case, you have to use the pdf password remover to remove the print permission.Here is tutorial on how to remove it on windows:

My printer won't print ADOBE files, but prints all word documents


I believe you are misunderstanding what you're "telling" the computer to do. You are telling the computer (I assume in Microsoft Word, but perhaps elsewhere) to generate an electronic document in PDF format. (I believe PDF stands for Portable Document Format)
It uses a printing metaphor because like a paper copy, the PDF file is designed for people to read, not edit the document you have created. Also, some PDF-making software methods involve pretending to be a printer, which allows the user to make a PDF file in any program that would normally only output your work to a printer.
Most people, when wanting to print a PDF document onto paper, open it with Adobe's Acrobat Reader (which is free software) and print the document from there. For sharing a document that you want no changes to, this is a superior option to sending people an MS Word .doc (or .docx) file, which does not have its information "locked" onto virtual pages in the file.
