If the washer does not agitate or spin, but will STILL drain, the likely culprit is a broken motor coupling. You may also hear a loud rattling sound as the drive motor engages, but the tub no longer spins. That could be the "grinding" noise you hear. Whirlpool uses a motor coupling in the place of a drive belt. It is located between the drive motor and and gearcase (transmission). This configuration is known as a "direct-drive" system. It is common for the coupler to wear out with age and break. Newer versions of this coupler are more resilient and resist breakage. The following link explains how to access and/or replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574231-replacing_a_motor_coupling

The part number for the improved motor coupling is included in the link I provided. The average cost is about $10 - $15. You can purchase replacements at any of the following webistes:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

Prices vary between sites, so shop and compare. If you do not wish to order on line, take the part number provided and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. This is a common part they should have in their in-store inventory.

If you have questions, or if the symptoms I describe do not match what you are experiencing, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

Check for a failed capacitor under the control panel It is a start/run capacitor that the motor needs to start running. The motor will hum and if left will eventually burn out.

Wont agitate or spin tryied putting on drain spin setting pump will run and run but wont spin

Top loader washers the main reason is either the motor coupling has failed. You will hear a grinding or growling or whirring noise or the lid switch has failed. The lid switchy will keep it from spinning but usually it will agitate. Check and make sure the drum is not froze and won't move, if it is free, check the coupling under the tub and make sure the motor and tranny are connected. If they are then the transmission may have failed. If this is a front loader the main reasons are a bad motor.

I have Kenmore 90 series Model 110 20902 990. I was washing sheets and the agitator got jammed. I removed everything and now it will not spin. There also is a clicking sound. Is the transmission blown or...

The coupling below the tub and agitator has broken. the coupling hooks the motor to the transmission. Very easy repair and parts are cheap, around 20.00 for the part. While your at it get a set of agitator dogs. These are plastic tabs that go in the agitator, they are what causes it to agitate in one direction. These are also only 10.00 and it will save you a service call later. There are many posts and instructions on this repair and the best thing is you can do it yourself with little tools!

Washer not spinning

Hi,

If you are neither spinning nor agitating and you can hear the motor running (humming or buzzing) the the problem is with the coupling. See the first link below to repair.

If the motor does not run, only fills, no drain, no buzz no hum then the problem is most likely with the lid switch, see the second link. There is video near the bottom of that page showing how to replace it. Let me know if this helps.

Your washer is a direct-drive model which means it uses a motor coupling instead of a drive belt. The symptoms your washer exhibits is typical of a motor coupling gone bad.

If the washer will fill and drain, but won't agitate or spin, the most common cause is a broken motor coupling. The noise of the motor engaging, lack of agitation and ability to still drain are the usual symptoms. This is a common fail item with this model washer through normal wear and tear. Newer versions of the coupler are more resilient and resist breaking. The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574231-replacing_a_motor_coupling

The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the transmission and takes the place of a drive belt. This configuration is known as a "direct-drive" system. They do wear out and can break. The replacement part number is included in the link I provided and is an improved upgraded coupling that is more resilient. It should last longer. If you have questions, or require additional assistance, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

A replacement coupler can be purchased for about $10 - $15. The following websites are great sources for replacement parts:

searspartsdirect.com
pcappliancerepair.com
appliancepartspros.com
repairclinic.com

If you have any questions about this repair, or if you require additional assistance, pease post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.

The washer does not agitate or spin.

If the washer does not agitate at all, does not spin, but will still drain, this is a symptom of a broken motor coupling.

The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385250-replacing_motor_coupling_kenmore_top

This is a very simple repair that doesn't cost much. The repair is actually much easier than you think and requires no special tools. The part number is included in the link I provided. Appliancepartspros.com carries a replacement motor coupling for about $11.

NOTE: A broken motor coupling is usually accompanied by a loud rattling noise. You can hear the motor engaging and running, but there is no tub action.

If you need an illustration, you can refer to the website I mentioned and locate item 13 under the Brake/Clutch/Gearcase/Motor/Pump section.

The motor coupling is located between the drive motor and the gearcase (transmission). It takes the place of a drive belt and commonly fails on Whirlpool manufactured top loaders due to normal wear and tear. This configuration is known as a "direct-drive" system. The replacement motor couplings are more resilient and resist breaking better, because the manufacturer added a steel grommet.

If you have any questions about this repair, or if you need additional assistance, please let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

Let me know if you have any questions. I hope you find this information helpful. NOTE: There are other problems that can cause the washer symptoms as you describe, but the motor coupling is the least expensive and easiest solution to try first. If the motor coupling is still intact, please let me know.
