In most cases there will only be two (power - usually black or blue in color, and neutral - usually white in color), sometimes three ( black and white, plus a ground wire - (usually green in color or a bare copper wire).
Take your new pull chain switch and connect one wire from it with one of the black wires that you disconnected from the previous switch. It doesn't matter which one. Then, connect the other switch wire with the other black wire that was connected to the old switch. Secure both pairs of wires with wire connectors and wrap a strip of electrical tape around the connectors where they meet the wire.
- If the fan has three speeds and the pullchain has four wires, it is most commonly a L-1-2-3 pullchain. This is a single pole triple throw switch with an off position. It connects the power from L to 1, 2, or 3 respectively, one for each speed.

Hi,
The black definetly goes on L...The blue is probably 1
The other two wires will be 2 and 3 but not sure which order they will be as they are odd colors. But if you fan goes high, low then medium you have them backwards and you just need to change those two wires.

This link will alos help to explain it all and goes into grest detail.

    Hi,

    Honestly I feel that you have bigger problems then the switch...

    If the motor is humming and then fan is not running then you need to go shopping.....

    Make your wife happy and take her along... my wife LOVES Lowe's...:-)

    I hit the tools and she goes to find new decorations, paint or appliances...

    You want to keep her in the light/ceiling fan section... :-)

Black and white go to the black and white coming out of the rest of the fan, those or your power and common.

Blue controls the light and yellow controls the fan.

Look at the wiring diagram for the switch to determine what terminals 1, 2, and 3 control.

It is most likely like this......

L = B
1 = W
2 = Y
3 + B

Verify by the switches diagram.

For many four wire pullchains:
Yours would be the 5th choice.
L - Black, 1 - Grey, 2 - Brown, 3 - Purple
L - Orange, 1 - Black, 2 - Yellow, 3 - Purple
L - Black, 1 - Grey, 2 - Brown, 3 - Green
L - Grey, 1 - Yellow, 2 - Purple, 3 - Black
L - White, 1- Black, 2 - Blue, 3 - Yellow

Make sure you bought the correct replacement switch.

Old fan switch has 4 wires, new one has 3. A Ceiling fan light switch is for the fan, not the light, correct?

You have 2 questions:
1) Pull-chain Switch question:
You need a fan switch with 4 wires.
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&productId=202191016&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&PID=500871&cm_mmc=CJ-_-500871-_-10368321&cpncode=00-29062147-2&AID=10368321&cj=true&srccode=cii_9324560&locStoreNum=577
Your pull-chain switch has one wire that connects to Hot from wall switch. And then one wire for each of the 3 speeds.
Best way to start is to test the old switch with continuity tester.

Compare results with following image of 3-wire switch for general reference:

2) Ceiling fan pull chain switch is for the fan only.

How to attach an on/off chain to a ceiling light- the original broke off somewhere inside. The fan switch is intact. This is one unit.

You need the little coupler thing that connects to the ball that makes up the chain. If you dont have the coupler ... you could get one at your local Ace Hardware store ... or you could just purchase a similar switch which would have the coupler on the chain.

Replacing a pull chain 3-way ceiling fan light switch

OK .. the thick black and white are the power for the fan , are there also white wires on the lamp sockets ..??
The thick black wire should connect to the black wire on the switch.
The small black wires connect to the red and blue wire on the switch .. two small black wires each .. that should give you a position for 2 lights , and 4 lights, on the step switch .. but there should be white wires from the lamp sockets connected to the thick white from the fan .

please respond .

L WENT TO TURN ON LAMP AND THE PULL CORD CAME OUT NOW L CAN NOT TURN ON . HOW DO L REPLACE CORD

You can buy a new switch or possibly chain at a hardware store. You will have to take apart the bulb socket (make sure that the lamp is unplugged first) and see if there is enought chain left to add on another length of chain. If not, you will have to replace the whole socket and switch. Good luck!

I can't find a replacement fan 3 speed switch for my ceiling fan Hampton Bay Model 92427

Hi azwaverid!

I just had a similar problem with my ceiling fan, not sure if I have the same model as you (the fan was in the house when I bought it). I do have the exact same pull chain switch (K.T.E 2035080).

I went to a big home improvement store and the salesman gave me some 3-way switch and guaranteed it would work. The switch had only 3 wires, not 4 like the original. Can you guess what happened next? That's right, their part didn't work.

Being an engineer, I could not admit defeat. I consulted with other engineers I work with, and they pointed me to a "mom & pop" electronics store close to my house. I went to Centennial Electronics in Colorado Springs, CO. The sales staff didn't have experience with this problem, but at least helped me and offered suggestions.

I ended up buying a Philmore Pull Chain Switch for $2.51 after tax. This worked perfect! Just be sure to place the wires in the right slots. On my fan, the following positions and wire colors were: L - Orange, 1 - Yellow, 2 - Purple, and 3 - Blue (I just matched them up the same as the K.T.E. switch colors & positions).

Hope this helps!
Bob

P.s. The exact part I used was:
Philmore No. 30-9152 (UPC code: 0 38975 39152 6). The box says (everywhere you see a semi-colon is a line break): Philmore PULL CHAIN SWITCH; L-1-2-3, L-2-3, L-1-3, L-1-2, PUSH-IN TERMINAL; 6A-125V AC, 3A-250V AC; Made in Taiwan No. 30-9152; LKG Industries - Rockford, IL
