I need the security key to my existing wireless netgear router.

I have my HP laptop connected to netgear wireless, but I just bought an ACER laptop while the HP one is being worked on and when trying to connect the ACER to NETGEAR it's asking for a security key. Where do I find it? My son threw away the netgear box, but I have still have the netgear cd.

The Security Key is normally used for Wireless routers to protect your connection from any unauthorized use. As you have said that you do not have the Security key for your router with you, the best way to connect your ACER laptop to the Netgear router is by asking your Wireless service provider to reset the security key & freshly reentering the same on both of your HP & ACER laptops.

Connecting hp712c to hp g7 notebook via netgear wnr 2000?

To connect your computer to a wireless router, you click the Refresh network list, then Choose your wireless network and then click Connect to your secured Wireless Network, it will asks for a Network Key before allowing you to connect into your wireless network. This Network Key is either the WEP, or WPA or WPA2 Encryption key that is used to configure the Wireless Router. The Passphrase is an alternate way to setup the Encryption key.
When you are requested for a Network Key, you can just enter the Passphrase that was used to configure the Encryption key in the wireless router. http://www.fixya.com/support/r5270415-network_password_network_address For information on securing your wireless network, configuring the wireless router and configuring the wireless card in the laptop/computer, please click on this link and follow my instructions :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security

I have just bought anew laptop cant get onto internet it wants me to type in security key i dont know what this is can you help me please?

  • If your are trying to connect via wireless from your laptop to the Netgear router, most likely it's requiring you to input the wireless security key(usually it's WEP or WPA encryption).

  • Access the router's setup page by typing http://www.routerlogin.net or 192.168.1.1 in the address field of your browser(IE or Chrome). On the login use the default username and password(admin, password).

  • After logging in. Look at the main menu on the left, click on Wireless Settings, from there you can check the Wireless Key. If the wireless security is set to WEP, use the available Key code but If it's WPA, what you need is the passphrase.

Type the Key or Passphrase on your wireless laptop and it should connect to the router.

I have bought this equipment, and i wish to make a secure connection and add other laptops and computers. but everytime i do so, i loose the connection, i wish to use the wi-fi protected set up

If you want to use secure wireless connection just use WEP or WPA security encription for wireless. Protected set up does not do this. This is for in house laptop connections. In the wireless tap of your netgear choose manual set up or wireless security option and then choose WEP or WPA option. You will have to make a key and put this key in to every wireless device in house. Hope this helps.

This is a link to manual for your router.

Acer Aspire One will not connect to wireless router

Most Acers use an IPN2220 Wireless card. If yours does, you use XP, and your router is using WPA or WPA2 (TKIP or AES) security then you'll need to update the driver by searching for it manually using the Custom button (Hardware) in Windows update (instead of Express). This driver is not part of XP service pack 2 or 3. In my experience if you don't update to the newest common form of home wireless security (WPA2 AES) then the older formats seem to become unreliable in the way you discribe

We have netgear I just bought another laptop and

there is a reset button on the router, you could reset it to factory defaults but this will remove any security so it will have to be set up again (check the manual) better still connect to the router by a wire and access its configuration page (type it ip address into the address bar of internet explorer 192.168.1.1 or similar (check manual or netgear website) and change the key to what you want.
