There are 2 other options for an engine in this mower.
Briggs and Stratton, and Onan.
All that you need besides the size of the engine that you need is that you will need to know your output shaft size to determine the correct engine to put on this mower.

The easiest thing would go through a local dealer if there is one otherwise here are their respective websites.

Are there a difference in the coils on a 26 hp kohler?

Yes and the numbers should match up on both old coils. The new coils will have a different part number because they have updated them.

Where do you drain the oil on a kohler 26 hp twin V engine?

I have the same engine on my craftsman. there is a yellow cap on the opposite side from the oil filter. It's located low (for obvious reasons) near the frame. You will need to: remove the cap and connect a hose in order to not create a mess. (the tube was provided with the manuals when purchased) No oil will come out yet at this point. The oil starts to flow when you push in and twist the connector that the hose fits on to.

This was my first experience needing to use a hose to change oil, but it wasn't too bad. Have some paper towels handy though just in case, lol.

Craftsman mower with 26hp kohler smokes when i cut on hill, why?

what happens is the oil gets into the valves which will come out the exhaust when on level ground after a side to side or going straight down because the valve's are in the front of engine which is pointing to the front of mower you wont hurt the engine if it does that i would just check the oil often to make sure it doesn't run out
