First, try plugging in any USB keyboard to your laptop to try the "problem keys" be sure it's just your laptop's built-in keyboard that's messed up.

PowerbookMedic.com sells the built-in keyboard that goes in your 17" MacBook Pro for about $85. That will probably take care of the problem, but check iFixit.com for a guide (with pictures) on how to replace the keyboard, to assess whether you're comfortable undertaking the task.

I have recently bought the games Riven and Diablo 2. They are supposed to be PC and Mac compatible (I have a MacBook) but when I go to install them, get a message - "You cannot open (game) installer...

Install Bootcamp, install XP on it and the games in XP. BTW you will get much better framerates this way, OSX is worthless as a gaming platform (it's slower even than most Linux distributions).

InstallatIon of Mac OS X 10.4.10

White screen issues on your Macbook are more often than not, an indication that you may have a connected peripheral or device which may be hindering your Macbook's normal start up function

What you need to do first, is remove all peripherals from (printers, scanners, USB drives etc.) and then reboot your Macbook.

If your Macbook starts up normally without a white screen, leave all the peripherals disconnected and see if you can proceed to run all of your software updates, in Apple menu>Software Updates, first, including updating to the final version of Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, 10.4.11.

Once all of your updates are completed, then you will need to go through a process of elimination by connecting one peripheral at a time, then properly shutting down and restarting your Macbook with each device, to see if your Macbook goes to a White screen.

Depending on the number of peripherals you have normally connected to your Macbook, this may seem a little tedious at first. But considering how bothersome a White screen is, it will be worth it solving the mystery of which peripheral is causing the white screen and failure to boot up normally.

If it turns out that one of the devices you had connected was in fact, causing the white screen, this will be the opportunity for to research online, visiting the affected device's manufacturer's website or even use Google, to confirm if there are any known issues and/or updates available to address that issue.

There are other variables which can come into view with a white screen issue, but this is a good way to start in terms of working toward a viable solution to this issue with your Macbook.

I hope this helps, let me know if you have more questions.

Macbook battery level shows fully charged at 83 percent instead of 100 percent. Is this a power inverter problem? It's a first generation Macbook

Most likely this is because you are loosing cells in your battery; the same ageing process that happens to us all. I'm guessing that in System Profiler under Battery it says 100-200 cycles or more. You cannot do anything to stop or reverse this. To prolong the life of your battery, once you unplug your power cable, keep it unplugged until (a bit after) it asks for you to put it in, and then leave it there until fully charged.

New Macbook ?

Hi there,

Apple don't discuss product releases outside of Apple. But going from past history, Apple release new models around every 9 months. I am not sure if they will keep the white polycarbonate model though, as it is using the old technology. My feeling is they will make all the models the new aluminum.

Cheers

No screen activity on startup

hi wa_flyboy,

I suggest you first do a test to determine if it is your macbook's screen or graphics processor which is at fault. To do this you need to connect an external display to your macbook.

The macbook has a mini-DVI port for connection to external displays. Depending on the connector of the external display you use to do the test, you are either going to need a mini-DVI to DVI adapter (for a DVI display) or a mini-DVI to VGA adapter (for a VGA display). These adapters are sold separately by Apple, see http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?nnmm=browse&mco=669DFFE0&node=home/shop_mac/mac_accessories/displays

If an image is displayed on the external display after you have connected it to your macbook, you know that the screen of your macbook is faulty. In this case it would be an economical option to take the macbook to a repair shop where a technician can determine the faulty component (either one of the following display components of a TFT LCD screen can fail over time; the inverter, the backlight or the cabling). These can be replaced under warranty or they can order new ones if the warranty has expired.

If the external display shows the same symptoms as your macbook's display, it is the macbook's graphics processor which is at fault. I'm sorry to inform you that I think this is the cause of your macbook's display problem. Replacing the graphics processor of your macbook entails replacing the motherboard.
If the macbook is still under warranty I suggest you replace it and let technicians migrate your data from your current macbook's hard disk to your new one.
If the warranty of your macbook has expired, it's a more economical option to buy a new one and migrate your data to the new macbook. This will only cost a few dollars more than the cost of replacing the faulty motherboard (including the service costs of the repair shop to which you take your macbook), but is still more economical seeing as how you get a new machine which has a full warranty.

I hope this is helpful information and thanks for using the FixYa services
Kind Regards
