This is going to be one of those frustating things that is hard to solve - or it will just solve itself!
I was out doing a service call with a client with the same router. Accidentally the router had been reset and the SSID had returned to netgear and the security had been turned off.
Resetting the SSID and wireless security is straightforward and at the end I could connect easily with my iPod Touch (1st gen) - however, the client's eMac couldn't connect - he constantly got "It was not possible to connect" messages. Noting that there were about a dozen other transmitters of varying strengths being picked up I decided to change the channel that the netgear was using. This worked - he could now connect but the emac kept saying that the password he was sending was incorrect. (I'm still connected). After some umming and arring we decided to switch the password back to one that had been using when the system was first installed. Now he can connect but my pod says "It was not possible to connect" - it didn't even ask for the password - it just rejected out of hand - all the other transmitters asked for the password. Even rebooting the pod had no effect.
Anyway - the job was done as it was getting him reconnected that was the issue.

If by hook up, you mean wired. NO! You can connect it wirelessly, it's a WiFi ready device. All you need to do is to go to Settings> WiFi>
.. Turn ON WiFi and select from available networks around you.
Normally, WiFi signals are protected by a password. You need to know the correct password first before you can connect to that WiFi network.

My ipod touch is new and has no damage done to it. i have a wireless network in my house with a full connection and i have the correct password. it recognizes my network ( my networks name is flower) and i...

Touch the "Settings" icon on the home screen of the iPod touch. The iPod does not require you to press down very hard to select an icon. Using your finger, lightly tap the application you want to activate it.
  • Step 2 Choose the Wi-Fi setting and turn it on. You may need to wait a moment while the device locates available networks.
  • Step 3 Select the wireless network you want to connect to. You may have more than one option based on your location. If you are prompted for a password, enter it and touch "Join."
  • Step 4 Opt to have your iPod alert you when there is a new network you can join. This can be useful if you are no longer in range of a network you have previously used. To receive these messages, turn on the "Ask to Join Networks" feature.
  • Step 5 Tell the iPod touch to "forget" a wireless network that you no longer want to use, so it will not automatically try to connect you. Under the Wi-Fi settings, tap the ">" button next to the network you want to delete and then touch "Forget this network."
  • Step 6 Expect that some wireless networks detected by your iPod touch will ask you to sign up for a fee-based service. If this is acceptable to you, open up the Safari application from the home screen. You will be taken to a website that explains the terms of service and accepts credit card payments for wireless Internet access.

    • Don't despair if you do not have a wireless network connection in your home. Public libraries often have wireless Internet access and do not charge their patrons for using it. Local cafes, coffeehouses and bookstores may also provide hotspots to their customers, but you may have to pay a fee for the service.
    • Fully charge the battery of your iPod touch before you go in search of a wireless network. Using the USB cable that came with your iPod, hook your iPod up to your computer. Make sure your computer does not go into "sleep" mode or the battery may actually drain instead of charge
