a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

How do I install maps on my GPS?

First you need to have Mapinstall app on your computer

Once MapInstall is installed, to load maps:
  1. Connect the Garmin device to the computer
  2. Open the MapInstall program
    • MapInstall appears in the Start menu or Start screen on Windows
    • MapInstall appears in the Applications folder on a Mac
  3. Select the device or SD card
    • If all compatible map products installed on the computer will fit completely on the selected device, MapInstall will give options to Send Maps (Mac)/Continue (Windows) or Customize
      • Send Maps/Continue will send all the maps that will fit on the device
      • Customize will allow the selection of individual map products
      • Advanced/Partial Install will allow sections of the map products to be sent without sending the whole map product
    • If all map products installed on the computer will not fit completely on the selected device, MapInstall will give the option to Continue
      • This will allow the selection of individual map products
      • Advanced/Partial Install will allow the selection of individual sections of the map products
    • If loading the map to a SD card or an older Garmin device, MapInstall will give the option to Continue
      • MapInstall will allow the selection of individual sections of the map products - similar to the Advanced/Partial Install option
  4. Click Send Maps (Mac) / Continue (Windows)

We downloaded a European map onto the SD card, however, when we look at maps available, the Garmin 260 is not looking at the map on the SD card. How do we tell the device to use the card to search for the...

You need to download the map to your compute rather than the SD card. When downloading the default destination is the satnav but you can change it to your computer. When it's installed to your computer you then click the windows START button and in the list of programs you'll find a GARMIN folder with a program called MAPINSTALL. Connect the satnav to your computer with the SD card in. Run MAPINSTALL and select the SD card as the destination.

You can get more details of how to do it at
Note maps installed to SD cards do not always work with Garmin Nuvis. To give it every chance of success please follow the instructions at the above link about formatting the SD card.

The map takes approx 3 Gb of storage space so you need a 4 Gb memory card. When you download the map to your computer run it and install part of the map to your satnav. After this click the start button (bottom left of your computer screen) and find the menu folder "Garmin". In the Garmin folder you'll find "Mapinstall" With the memory card in your satnav, and the satnav connected to your computer run mapinstall being sure to select the memory card as the destination. (It will be by default your satnav not your memory card). When the installation is complete the satnav will automatically switch to the map on your memory card when needed. You'll find detailed instructions of how to prepare the memory card and install the map on it at

How to restore garmin nuvi 550 memory to original. i accidently loaded a map to the gps memory and not the memory card. I tried a factory reset but some files are still there and the map does not work.

It's not possible to undo a map install. However you should be able to re-download the original map from the Garmin website. Go to and log into myGarmin. Click on the myMaps t tab. There you will see the maps you have on your satnav. Under the one you want to install to the satnav click on "Details" which should be in blue writing. This will bring you to a page where you should be able to download it again.

When you have downloaded the first map download the second to your computer. When the website shows that it has found your satnav it will show it with a drop down arrow. Click the drop-down arrow and select download to computer.

After it's downloaded click the windows start button and you will find a garmin icon in your list of programs. Click on garmin and you'll see an icon called MAPINSTALL. Click on this.

When you try to install the map using mapinstall it will again try to install it to your satnav. When your satnav is detected it will again show it with a drop-down arrow. Click this and select your memory card. The map will then be installed to your memory card.

How do I download maps from the Garmin web site to the SD card in my Nuvi 5000?

To install the map on an SD card you first need to download it to your computer. When you're setting up the download the website normally selects your satnav as the destination. There's a drop down arrow and when you click it you find an option to "update map on the satnav and the computer". Select this option. If the satnav can't take the full map you'll need to select the part to download to the satnav. The full map should download to your computer.
After the download is finished click START on your computer and then ALL PROGRAMS. Click on GARMIN and then on MAPINSTALL. The mapinstall program will also select your satnav as the location for installing the map. When it does click on the drop down arrow and select the drive letter of the SD card. This will install it to the SD card. Note it can take 3 to 4 hours to install depending on the map size. Don't interrupt it while it's installing or you could destroy your satnav.

I purchase the lifetime updates for my Nuvi 200W GPS and now it will not allow me to download any updates on to it due to not enough memory. What can I do. I am pretty upset because I spent the money for...

Unfortunately the garmin 200W, like most of the garmin satnavs, doesn't have much storage space so you should be given the option to download part of the map only to your satnav. To get the full map the only option is to download the map to your computer. When you go to download the map from the garmin website select OPTIONS. In the options menu select download to computer. This installs a program called Mapinstall on your computer which contains the map. If you need to use more of the map you can then either replace the part installed on your satnav by running the mapinstall program from your computer or install it to an SD card. Note however that while garmin say that nuvi satnavs support SD cards up to 16 Gb some cards don't seem to work in them. Before spending all the time it takes to put your map on the card test it in your satnav first by putting music or pictures on it to see if it works

I have no maps on the screen its like i lost all the data. it says there are no roads near this start point. every thing else works mp3, settings, volume, bluetooth, etc.

it sounds like you may have just deselected the maps.

go to tools settings map then map info(bottom of the screen)

check that there is a tick next to your mapset if not just tap the name of the map and you should be sorted out.

Garmin nuvi 200w can't update all 49 lower states

OK, I just finally am getting through all of this myself.

First, the bad news. You cannot load all of the lower 49 states onto your Garmin 200W as-is. The map file is over 1GB and the 200W only has 991MBs of memory.

So, go out and get yourself a SD card. I got a 2GB card at OfficeDepot for $8. It was at the counter, not back with the other cards they carry (Note: The speed showed as 60x. The slightly more expensive ones, $12-$15, may be faster, like 150x.)

You'll also need to get yourself MapInstall, available from the Garmin site. BUT, don't try to use this right away, a mistake I made. If you do, you basically get a message that MapInstall can't be installed because it's not already installed. Seriously.

BUT, MapInstall GETS installed, or whatever, when you load your 2010 maps (or partial maps), so after you do your partial install, THEN you can install the MapInstall program. (May not be necessary, but remember, I did this out of order. Look for a "Garmin" folder under your Programs, or All Programs, and see if it's already there after you install your 2010 maps.)

Next, run MapInstall. The next mistake I made was that at the window where it finds your device, I clicked on the NEXT button. DON'T. Notice that your device is shown in a drop-down box. Click on that, and you can select your SD card for the destination.

THEN click NEXT. On my system, it appears as if it shows you what IS already on the 200W, and lets you select whatever you want to add. I put everything else available on the SD card.

I just this minute finished loading "the rest" and checked it out. Works flawlessly. I easily found a seafood restaraunt in Anchorage (Alaska was not loaded in the intitial install.)

Just remember that you have to keep the SD card in the Garmin at all times to use those maps. That really shouldn't be a problem though.

Hope this helps eveyone.
