Output tray problem

When I try to print, I get the error message that the paper output tray is closed even though it isn't. It will print anyway, but only if I continuously hold the tray down with my fingers. This may be a simple problem but it is quite annoying. Please help.

I have the same problem with a MP500 which shows "Paper output tray is closed. Press the lower left button to open the paper output tray." error message even when the tray is fully open. I suspect it is a sensor on the right side adjacent to the output tray hinge that apparently signals that the tray is open when a black part of the tray covers the sensor's head. It only has two leads so I am wondering if it is simply a light sensor that closes or opens the circuit when no light is getting to it. Can I just bridge the circuit (or alternatively, break the circuit so the sensor permanently shows that the paper tray is open? Will that upset the CD printing facility.

Thanks yote_killer, the lever was the culprit. When we stuck a toothpick under the lever it printed fine without any assistance. Unfortunately, the lever is plastic so I can't bend it or change its shape. The toothpick is kind of a crappy fix, so I am not sure how I can make it more permanent.

The problem may be the lever that presses on the spring is not making contact when the output tray is open. But when you press on the tray it moves just enough to make enough contact so it operates. That contactor is just visible through the little opening. It may be possible to bend it carefully, ever so slightly until it works the way it supposed to. Also shine a bright light into the opening and see if the plastic part of the tray is not broken. I don't think that it should affect CD printing (if you jumped the switch) because the tray needs to be open to access the CD tray. So if the microswitch does not contact the tray nothing will work. I took mine apart (both side panels, document cover and front door). There is a microswitch just to the right of the right hinge point which has a lever that is activated by a plastic outcropping on the back, right of the front door. I added a couple layers of gorilla tape to that very small surface of the outcropping which will now raise the lever up a little bit more when the door is open. Tried multiple test prints and it works like a charm.

When I wrote, "There is a microswitch just to the right of the right hinge point which has a lever that is activated by a plastic outcropping on the back, right of the front door.", it's more clearly stated as, "There is a microswitch just to the right of the front door's right hinge point which has a lever that is activated by a plastic outcropping on the back, right corner of the front door." I wasn't sure how to edit my original post so adding a comment was the most apparent way to clarify.

Thanks for answering. However on the MP500 the sensor is very small and is apparently a light sensor that indicates "on" or "off". I have pulled it out to see if it has been covered by dust or damaged. Looks OK so now I have to reassemble the printer and try bridging or open circuiting the circuit.

The blinking is just an attention light so there's nothing to worry about that. Try adjusting your paper tray to the paper size you are about to use. Or try checking the duplexer panif its positioned properly. Hope this helps.

I have Canon pixma MX310 and I just trying to set it up.I'm trying to print and there is message open paper out tray. What is that mean and how I can fix it

The printer will not print as long as the paper output tray is closed.
  1. Open the Paper Output Tray (2).
Put your finger in the rounded indent beside the Paper Output Tray and open it gently.

  2. Open the Output Tray Extension (3).
Open up and set the Output Tray Extension completely by pressing down the hollow on its front side.

  3. Adjust the position of the Paper Thickness Lever (4).
Set it to the right when printing on envelopes or T-shirt transfers, and left when printing on any other type of paper.

Ricoh AP3800C "Output tray full"

Check the little black piece of plastic that senses the printed page exiting the machine. Our sensor was stuck and I was getting the same message (an similar Ricoh product). When I gently reset the black piece to center, moving freely, printing worked again. I think the sensor got jammed up when we were trying to remove a bad paper misfeed.

Ricoh manuals very confusing on this error message. They refer to standard tray, tray one, etc. without being clear whether it's a paper feed tray or the so-called "standard OUTPUT tray." The output is not really a tray, it's just the depression where your sheet lands after printing. I wrenched on the paper feed trays and their settings for an hour before I figured out they meant OUTPUT.

Printer door open message

Apparently a solution has already been posted here: http://www.fixya.com/support/t345435-ip4300canon_printer

The author provides instructions on opening the printer and gluing the sensor into the "open" position (assuming that the sensor still works).
