Question about Canon PIXMA iP5000 InkJet Photo Printer
When I try to print, I get the error message that the paper output tray is closed even though it isn't. It will print anyway, but only if I continuously hold the tray down with my fingers. This may be a simple problem but it is quite annoying. Please help.
The problem may be the lever that presses on the spring is not making contact when the output tray is open. But when you press on the tray it moves just enough to make enough contact so it operates. That contactor is just visible through the little opening. It may be possible to bend it carefully, ever so slightly until it works the way it supposed to. Also shine a bright light into the opening and see if the plastic part of the tray is not broken. I don't think that it should affect CD printing (if you jumped the switch) because the tray needs to be open to access the CD tray. So if the microswitch does not contact the tray nothing will work. Remember the doctor should look down the patients throat before he removes the tonsils

I took mine apart (both side panels, document cover and front door). There is a microswitch just to the right of the right hinge point which has a lever that is activated by a plastic outcropping on the back, right of the front door. I added a couple layers of gorilla tape to that very small surface of the outcropping which will now raise the lever up a little bit more when the door is open. Tried multiple test prints and it works like a charm.

Thanks for answering. However on the MP500 the sensor is very small and is apparently a light sensor that indicates "on" or "off". I have pulled it out to see if it has been covered by dust or damaged. Looks OK so now I have to reassemble the printer and try bridging or open circuiting the circuit.
