Question about Frigidaire Washing Machines

1 Answer

Brown & black spots on some of the clothes coming out of washer.

I have a 10 yr-old Frigidaire Gallery FWT647GHS0. Clothes coming out of washer have brown spots, some black greasy spots, and some little black lines. But not on all the clothes . . .just some of them. I cleaned out a lot of dirt from behind the black gasket in front of the drum, but the spots just keep on showing up. Is dirt backing up from the line that goes to the drain? Is there dirt in the drum somewhere that I can remove? Thank you

How would a five-year warranty help with a ten-year-old machine? So where is the transmission located that it can leak into the drum? Does the transmission account for all three different kinds of soiling? The brown spots looked like the sandy dirt I got from around the gasket, and the little black streaks looked like a pen (but no pen found in the washer).

My concern is from how far away will a repairman have to come to replace this transmission, and how expensive might it be? Is the transmission a sign the machine will be developing more and more problems and should just be replaced? The closest repairman might be in Odessa, TX or El Paso, TX . . . the first is 150 miles away, the second is 200 miles. And is the guy going to have to come once for a look, and then come back again with the transmission? I don't mean to sound like an airhead, but it gets complicated living in the middle of nowhere when repair people charge mileage. Is it SO likely to be the transmission that I could tell him to bring the transmission with him, or could it remotely possibly be something else?

Sorry for all the questions, I just want to be sure I am doing the best thing in the most financially feasible way.

Yes, it was very helpful to know that A. this is symptomatic of the wearing out of the transmission, B. replacing the transmission would not change the fact that the machine is old and this is just the first sign of its inevitable decline, and C. that given my remote location and the cost of the repair, I would most likely be better off just getting a new machine. Certainly it will be better to get a new machine than to remain in constant fear my clothes could be ruined, because at this point I had already stopped washing things I didn't want to risk losing. Thank you to taran 2005.

    Thanks for your response!!

BINGO!! You got it Correct. This is a Common Problem with Almost all washer's of that age. This is a Situation where Transmission started to Fail and the Rollers Worn Out.The grease that you talked about is always an indication of Failing Transmission and you would see more and more as the Transmission started to fail. The Streaks could be caused by worn Support glides and and allows the clothes to get streaked from the
metal grindings where the drum has been rubbing.

In short Words, i am sorry to comment - It is Better to Purchase a new Washer than Repair it. It is not economical to Replace Transmission. You could search on google and you would be surprised to know, that this is SO COMMON and yet no solution than replacement of Transmission.

Let me know, if needed further assistance.

    Hope i helped you.

Thanks for using ' Fixya ' and have a nice day!!

My clothes are being stained by brown/black marks. I think it is an oil leak into the drum. Is it a seal and is it easy to fix? Frigidaire Gallery Model # FWT647GHSO

Spots on clothing in a washer are usually caused by a reaction between detergent and fabric softeners, but to check and see if these spots are petroleum based (oil), try removing the spots with solvent. If the spots will come out with solvent, but not with soap and water, then it could be transmission oil that is leaking into the tub and this is very bad news. This was a common problem on the older GE and Hotpoint washers. Sorry to hear about the problem that you are having and I hope this helped. Best wishes.

Brown spots on clothes

Brown spots indicates a bearing is breaking up, the spots are the grease from the bearing and as the seal breaks down due to the bearings going off centre, the grease gets in the drum.
Get the bearings replaced if affordable.

Clothes are dirtier after washing...

The problem with your front load washer is a broken rear bearing. If you remove the rear panel, you will see brown "gunk" all over.
If you want to repair it on your own, order this:
