Question about Toshiba Satellite A215-S7407 Notebook

2 Answers

Has anyone with a Toshiba Satellite A215-S7407 installed XP?

In general, I really like the laptop, but it doesn't even run as fast as my 7+ year old desktop computer. I would miss some things in vista, but even with 3 GB of RAM it still takes forever to load the O/S and run Photoshop, encode videos, and the like.

Has anyone made the switch? Did it make a big difference? Are the drivers for XP readily available? Are there any important things I can do to speed up Vista on the Toshiba?

Silverdragon mentioned USB, which is sort of interesting because I do use USB quite a bit with my desktop computer, and it definitely can be a source of difficulties. Sometimes the computer won't even boot if the computer has, say, an iPOD plugged into it. I suppose it could be preferable to try to shut down some unneeded services, and see how much faster the computer runs (if any).

Qucklaunch? Why quicklaunch? that is my favorite way to launch applications as it does not clutter the screen, and the icons are available from any window so long as you are not full screen in certain applications. I have to admit to having about 50 icons in quicklaunch. My method is to have an entire full row of icons and have my task bar double wide to display active windows, and it gives more space to programs in the notification area, which as also double wide as a result.

Yes I don't like Vista too much either... XP SP 2, well & SP3, are pretty much solid, if your careful. I would imagine there are more drivers for XP than Vista anyway? I haven't regretted re-installing XP. Vista Win 7, they are all great IF you have drivers written specifically for that platform... NOT adapted from XP. and you combat all the self protection & permissions etc..And you don't really want anything USB... bit harsh, you'll be happy. I do have it on one of my many machines and it runs fine, but XP just always works.

Oh I didn't really say anything about speed up's.. Well first get rid of almost anything apart fro, necessary things in your "Quick launch" bar. If you have Norton.. remove it. Ensure you have done a Disk Cleanup, & it is Defragged also that you have at least 25% of your drive FREE. If you can, in BIOS give it as much video Ram as it can have allocated. Check for un-necessary services etc and shut them down & set to manual. Run BootVis from Microsoft it will optimise your bootup works well

make sure you don't ahve any programs or Viruses running in background, get Winsonar to check.

Quicklaunch is great BUT you don;t have to have then ALL start at boot time do you? I mean one can always simply run the software when you actually need it, & then leave it in the toolbar, for later use, when they all load at boot time it just slows the whole thing up. By QL, I really mean the bottom right toolbar. NOT the real QL, by the Start Button, Left hand side.

If you are looking for something to improve performance, check out your antivirus software. Some are major resource hogs (like Norton or Mcafe) while others are very light like Avira Antivir.

If you want a really easy way to do all the performance modifications at once, try Iolo System Mechanic. It has done wonders for every PC I have installed it on (including my $300 Windows 7 budget notebook).

The software is relatively inexpensive at outlets like Sams Club or Fry's (about $20) so I would recommend trying that first, and switch if it doesn't do enough for your needs.

Good luck!

Toshiba Satellite A215-S7407 ram upgrade

Try to disconnect the new ram you just bought one at the time to see which one is defective. Also, 32 bit operating systems won't detect 4 Gb or ram, but they will show 3 Gb (even though they will use all 4 Gb). To resolve this issue, make sure that if you are using windows Vista to download the latest service pack 1.

Disabled Satellite A215 internal speakers and now can't enable!

you may want to try and reinstall the driver from the manufacturers website. I had to do that with a brand new notebook as the speakers didn't work when first turned on. I'll see if I can locate a link and post again if I find it.
