Question about Western Digital My Book Essential Edition (WDG1U5000N) 500 GB Hard Drive
If zcomputerwiz solutions don't work, then remove the disk from the chassis, and install it into any desktop PC. It should show up as a regular harddisk, and you will be able to access your data. I have successfully done this with my WD MyBook Extreme Edition that had stopped being recognized by my desktop and laptop. Now its a regular drive in my desktop PC without the use of any special savior software. Good Fixin!!!

Try it on another computer. If that doesn't work the drive or enclosure may have issues. If the enclosure is dead (doesn't power up) there are guides for removing the drive for use with a USB to SATA cable or another enclosure. If the drive itself is toast (can be tested with tools from WD support) you are most likely out of luck.
Either way, contact WD technical support since they might be able to help you out.
