Purchase a solid state drive, 2.5" for laptops 3.5" for desktops (or use an adapter for notebook drives with a 2.5")

Connect your IDE cable (and power cable on desktops) to the drive, install Windows and you are done!

If you want to keep your existing data, get an external enclosure for the appropriate sized disk and use a program like Norton Ghost or Acronis True Image to clone the existing drive to the new one, then swap the two drives (SSD from enclosure to internal, other drive out to enclosure)

Laptop/Notebook Hard Drive Replacement.....

You may have been led to believe, or assume that some companies use proprietary hard disc drives in their Notebook PCs...Not the case at all!!!

Most Notebook PCs (laptops) use *
Ultra ATA 2.5" internal Hard Drives (HDD)
Even Dell, Gateway, Sony, etc..

*Note that Ultra ATA is also known as ATA-6.

So don't pay extra for a so-called proprietary type hard drive,
Just go online and find a compatible Drive to replace it.

Also, keep in mind that although your original HD might be a 4500 rpm
speed HD, You can use a faster one, like a 5400 RPM. (a 7200 rpm drive
will consume a little more power than you want and can tend to increase temperatures, so be aware).

I just thought everyone who doesn't know that, to know that.
I'll be posting more tips/tricks/advice whenever something comes to mind.

....There ya have it!

My hdd is creating noise & is not dectectable

if you hear a clicking noise thats the reader arm sfipping across platters on you hard drive
a dirty hard first clean all of the dust from your computer using a fine air blower from an air compressor making sure there is no moisture in the air line then give the hard drive a firm tap on one side to free up the read arm
then replace all the leads that attach to your hard drive including electrical extensions + IDE,SATA and the ones that attach from your motherboard to hard drive

good luck

I can't see my mac lacie ext hd on windows pc! Any software available? Thanks in advance

you can always goto Lacie.com , there you can find
all available drivers for their products , ?mac both
windows and mac use the same types of HDD
either an Ultra ATA or a SATA and even the new solid state , I have never heard of just a mac HDD
a good rule of thumb is to trouble shoot from the beginning like when a light doesn't work the first
thing you check is the bulb . start from the power cord , then the USB cord & USB hub , I'll be here
waiting for your reply

1. Has anyone installed 2Gb RAM memory in a Sony PCG-TR3A? please give details of memory specification. 2. Has anyone installed a HDD bigger than 40GB? please give me details of HDD specification.

Hi,
You can only upgrade the memory to 1GB in that model Vaio laptop.

The memory supported is DDR SDRAM which runs at 333MHz. There are 2 memory slots which support 1x512 module in each slot.
I recommend Kingston RAM as the manufacturer.

As for the HDD the laptop supports EIDE (IDE/ATA) hard drive. you can have anything up to 320GB. Seagate are excellent drives as well as Fujitsu.

Regards.

Can I replace an ultra ATA drive with an EIDE drive?

Yes there are several ways.

1st is there a spare IDE socket on the motherboard?

If not you can get a IDE to SATA convertor thet plugs in the back of the drive. or you can get a convertor for a SATA drive to make it IDE compatable.

What new HDD will match my Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 8?

Mark,
You can use any size HDD in your computer as a slave and it does not have to be an exact match for the maxtor. You will however need the make sure that the connections on the new drive match. For example SATA drives will not attache to an IDE cable and vice versa. The drive that you mentioned is an IDE style drive so unless your MOBO has SATA connectors on it you will need to buy an IDE/EIDE drive.

Hard drive

According to http://reviews.zdnet.co.uk/hardware/desktops/0,1000000973,10004197,00.htm this tower has Serial ATA, or SATA. Just to confirm, you can easily pop open the case and take a look at the hard-drives. If you see a wide thin ribbon-like cable connecting to your hard-drive then you need an Ultra ATA (or just ATA or IDE) drive. It looks like this:

If a thinner red cable connects to your drive, then that is SATA. It looks like this:
