For some reason my wireless router cannot be detected. The router works if I connect wired, but wireless isn't working.

The router was working fine earlier. I got a new modem today and ever since have been having some troubles. 3 of our PCs were working fine even after the modem was installed, but one was not. I'm wondering if in the process of trying to fix the one PC, I screwed up the network. On one of the PCs, while the network was working, I clicked enable Belkin. Since then, the network has not worked on any of the PCs.

Hello.

If you have tested accessing your network wirelessly with at least 2 devices with the same results, your router is probably faulty and needs to be replaced. Or, use the network and router wired.

Hope this helps.

If your computer has a wireless network adapter, Windows will automatically detect wireless networks in range of your computer. You can see a list of wireless networks that Windows has detected in Connect to a Network.

  • Open Connect to a Network by clicking the network icon (eff2d36c-9e0d-4d1a-9859-3af14fa4ccfc_73.jpg or da12251d-1e9a-4032-afae-009876c6c5a3_80.jpg) in the notification area.

If Windows doesn't detect a network that you think is in range of your computer, it could be because of one of the following reasons:

  • The wireless switch on your computer is turned off.

Many laptops have a wireless switch on the front or side of the computer. If your computer has a switch, make sure it's turned on. Some computers also use a function key combination to turn the switch on or off. Check the information that came with your computer for details on locating the wireless switch.

  • Your computer is too far from the wireless router or access point.

Move your computer closer to the router or access point. If the computer is portable, try moving it around to determine the range of the wireless signal and the best place to use the computer.

If you can't get closer to the router or access point, consider buying and installing an external antenna for your wireless network adapter. Many wireless network adapters are set up so that you can attach an external antenna to them, which provides better reception than a built-in antenna. Check the information that came with your wireless network adapter to see if you can install an additional antenna.

  • The wireless router or access point is turned off or isn't working properly.

There are two things to try:

    • Make sure the router or access point is turned on and that the wireless signal light is illuminated.

    • Reset the router or access point by unplugging it, waiting at least 10 seconds, and then plugging it back in.

My wireless router isn't working

I think you should reset the router and reconfigure it.
If the wired computer is also not working then I think you need to reconfigure it for sure.

Same situation here. Wired connection from modem works fine. I can also log in to the router via routerlogin.net. However, the router does not detect an internet connection.

It is showing that i am connected to a wireless network, but for some reason it want let me get on the internet.

To get out to the internet your network set up has to have the router's ip number as the GATEWAY and your ISP's DNS numbers (tho auto detect should work for that. DNS is what allows your connection to find websites and domains).

Check to make sure your MODEM (from the ISP) is actually connected. Connect directly to it without your router to see if you get on the net. Or if you have other computers on your network can they get out to the net?

Is the wireless network it shows you connected to your own network? Or has it perhaps picked up a neighbor's wifi?

The most likely problem is that it isn't detecting the DNS. If it's not picking it up automatically would will need to know your ISP's DNS numbers/addresses.

Check the IP address on the Vista wireless network connection. Make sure that there is not static IP address on the wireless connection. That could be one of the reason.

So the desktop is working with the wired connection. That means the wired part of the router is working . you will need to check the wireless settings of the router. For this you will need to access the router set up page. When you try to connect to the wireless network , Do you get any message ? Or you are not able to see any wireless network ? The message will be important to identify the problem. First try to connect to the wireless network on the laptop. Try to change the wireless channel on the router. That may help you. Can not connect wirelessly with router

The list of wireless routers that are available in Windows is very limited and the signal strength of any router that is detected is weak. This can occur when the Lite-On USB Wireless 802.11 b/g hardware and Windows are not able to fully synchronize the signal strength data. Figure 1: Example of detected wireless devices when the antenna cable wire is connected to secondary port c01153759.jpg Figure 2: Example of detected wireless devices in the same environment when the antenna cable wire is connected to primary port c01153760.jpg To correct this error , download and install Lite-On USB Wireless LAN Driver Update (sp35177) (in English) from the HP Web site. This update should only be applied if your PC has the Lit-On USB Wireless LAN adapter and is exhibiting the symptom. As a work-around, you can connect the wire that runs from the wireless antenna port to the primary port on the cord as follows: CAUTION: This product contains components that can be damaged by electrostatic discharge (ESD). To reduce the chance of ESD damage, work over a non-carpeted floor, use a static dissipative work surface (like a conductive foam pad), and wear an ESD wrist strap connected to a grounded surface.
  1. Open the side panel.
  2. Find the wireless networking board by following the antenna wire connected to the wireless networking antenna port on the back of the computer. Figure 3: Wireless networking hardware c01153761.jpg 1 - Wireless network board 2 - Antenna wire 3 - Wireless networking antenna port
  3. Very carefully, disconnect the small wire from the board by gently pulling the end of the wire away from the board.
  4. Connect the wire to the other available port on the board. Figure 4: Available port c01153762.jpg
  5. Replace the side panel, connect the power cord, turn on the computer, and use the computer again to verify that wireless signal strengths have improved.

Wired and wireless computers

First get your router works with the internet on the wired connection before considering the wireless connection simplying the initial problem.

Once the router works wired is time to try the wireless.

Once the wireless works unsecured you may want to change the router and wireless adapter to secure the wireless network.

So this can be a three step process.

If you internet service is provided by a cable(tv) there is a reasonable chance your router will work out of the box no configuration changes. However, if your internet service is supplied on the phone line chances your router will work as it comes out of the box are much less. Who is your Internet Service Provider and if possible can you supply a link to their help/support website so I can see if they supply configuration instructions?
