Ac adapter for laptop

I have a disabled daughter and someone gave her an Acer Aspire 3000LCI laptop because their Ac adapter (power supply cord) was bad and they didn't have it any more. I was wondering if we found some other type of supply cord can you use it or does it have to be specific to this computer. We don't know how good the computer is to even know if it is worth the price of the cord. Thanks CJ

I do not have any cords for this laptop and my main questions is if I use another cord from some other electrical device , that appears to fit into the computer, will it hurt the computer. It seems people have some spare cords but I didn't know if I can use them if they power up the computer. Thanks Cj

You need to clarify one issue.
Are we talking about just the power cord or power supply.
laptop power supplies

If it is just the cord, you can replace ot it with any that fits.
Power supply for your laptop should be 19v dc at 3.42A.
As long it fits and has rating as above and correct polarity(that means it is right way round) you can use it.

it's all about the power rating, volts and amps, and also whether the center and ring have same rating. If you check these from the old unit to the new one, then you'll be in good shape.

I'd measure the voltage with ohmmeter first, though.

The adapter light is on when first plugged in but then when I connect the adapter to my laptop the light goes off and it doesnt supply any power

I suggest check out the AC adapter first.

1) When plugged into power, and plugged into the laptop, gently wiggle the cable from the AC adapter TO laptop.

Any change?

Do the same on the power cord TO AC adapter.

NO?
Go on.

2) The port on the laptop that the plug from the AC adapter plugs into, is the DC Power Jack.
If we are discussing an Acer Aspire 5738Z Notebook PC, the DC Power Jack resembles this one, (Not installed),

http://www.batterysupport.com/acer-aspire-5738-jack-p-302046.html

(When I note the DC Power Jack, it is this link I will be referring to )

As you can see there is a Center Pin. All power removed from the laptop, use a small wooden, or plastic object, and see if this pin moves around.

ANY perceptible movement means a bad DC Power Jack.

DC Power Jack checks out it's back to the AC adapter.
Wanted to perform the easy diagnosis first.

This will require a multimeter. An economical, yet fine for this test multimeter, can be purchased for as little as $8 to $12.

Available in a multitude of stores. An auto parts store is but one example.
Analog or digital is fine.

(Analog is fine. Some of us still like 'em)

DC Voltage is what you are going to check.

Black probe lead (Negative) goes in the Common port on the multimeter. (COM)
Red probe lead (Positive) goes in the Voltage port on the multimeter. (V)

If the multimeter just has symbols around the Function Knob, set it to the dotted line over a solid line, symbol.

The plug on the end of the AC adapter, that plugs into the laptop, has a center hole, and a cylindrical metal shield surrounding it.

The Center Hole of the plug is where the red Positive lead, of the multimeter goes.

The outside cylindrical metal shell is where the black Negative lead of the multimeter goes.

Hold the AC adapter plug in one hand, and at the same time hold the red Positive multimeter probe in the center hole.

With the other hand touch the black Negative lead of the multimeter, to the cylindrical metal shield on the outside of the plug.

You should read 19 Volts (DC), or VERY close to it,

I believe the AC adapter is the problem. Post back in a Comment as to your findings.

Laptop won't a hold charge when plugged in

Remove the Laptops Battery, Plug in AC Adapter... Is it able to Stay Powered On?? Slightly wiggle the Cord Near the plug end while plugged in... Does it still receive true power??? If So, Its Not Your AC Adapter Or Your DC Jack And You should Look into Replacing Your Laptops Battery...

If You Are Not Able To Power THe Laptop Using Just The AC Adapter When The Battery Is Removed, Then You First Need To Check/Test The AC Adapter using A Multimeter To See If You Have A Faulty Cord... If Cord Is Still Getting Correct Power Through To The Plug Tip .. Then You Will Need To Replace The DC Jack (the port where your AC Adapter Plug Plugs into on the laptop)

Power cord attachment into the back of computer seems worn, it wants to run off battery instead of recharging through power supply

Either Have A Failing AC Adapter, Or A Failing DC Jack
you can test the AC Adapter using a multimeter (available at any home improvement center for $6)..
The DC Jack Would Need To Physically Be Checked To See If It's Faulty... which would intail removal of all parts down to the motherboard and visually inspect the DC Jack (the port where the Charger Cord Plugs into)

Remove The Battery... Plug AC Adapter Into Laptop.. Attempt To Power On....

Acer laptop 5315. While using the laptop it just

this laptop is cleverly designed, it is most probably the daughter board. this is where you connect you ac adapter. the daughter board or power board, eliminate the need for you to replace the whole motherboard when the connector is damaged. all you need to do is replace the power board. if this does not fix the issue, then there is a likely hood that you need to replace the motherboard

but before you attempt the above, first check if the ac adapter is not the problem

Acer 3680 ac pin broken

That's really not advisable. At our shop we do socket repairs, I suggest finding someone local who specialises in laptops and asking them to replace it. You can get the sockets on e-bay, etc, if you wish to try it at home, though I don't advise it.

Don't forget to take static safety precautions!

You still need to test the AC cord better.. Wiggling it in different areas to see if there is a break in the wires.... That is why i said watch for the Power light (when I say Power Light, not the one on the ac adapter cord... the power light on your laptop...)to see if it flickers or turns off at any point while you're testing the cord... If you have a Solid Lighted Power Light the whole time youre testing the AC cord (bending & wiggling it) then it is probably not the cord itself and i would then lean towards the DC jack...
