thank you so much!! but many people keep refrigerators in their garages and they work fine. is it because mine was only $350 new and it's just a piece of junk? i bought it from best buy and the sales person knew i was putting it in the garage. is this a known issue that he should have notified me of?

He is correct. The temp in the refrig controls how often and for how long the refrig runs. Lets say the temp in your garage is 34 degrees, and you have your refrig set to 36 degrees: The refrig will never run, the fresh foods section will cool to 34, and the freezer will warm to 34. Even if the temp is 45 in the garage and you set the fresh foods to be 33, the refrig will not need to run long enough and often enough to keep the freezer temp cold enough. You will most likely need to have the ambient room temp at least 55 degrees to get satisfactory refrigerator performance. Insulating the refrig will not help. (by the way, outdoor beverage vending machines use an internal heater in cold weather to prevent liquid beverages inside from freezing,..... so using that info, you could put a low wattage heater in your refrig to make your refrig run enough to make the freezer section work. The %&#* with that, just move it into the house!)

I own a sales and service shop in a small town. I "shop" the big guys on a regular basis, to check their pricing and knowledge of the product. If it has been over 3 months since I have visited the same location, I almost never see any of the same people. If you ask what the difference is between two similar models, they start looking for the visual differences on the controls to give them a clue. They don't know their products. I wish I could always compete on price, because I'd sure clean up on sales based on knowing the product, delivery time, and service. Unfortunatelly, the average consumer is only interested in the absolute lowest price, and nothing else seems to matter. (until it is too late,... after the sale, when there are questions or problems)

It could be a problem depending on how cold your garage gets in the winter. Most refrigerators depend on the compressor turning on to cool the freezer section and that cold air is used to cool the refrigerator section. If your the temperature in your garage gets in the 30-40 degree range in the winter. The compressor may not turn on sufficiently since the refrigerator is typically around the 35-40 degree range. This will cause the freezer to warm up to the fridge temperature and your freezer items will defrost.

Good day,
Yes, Frigidaire specifically states any temperature below 55 degrees will unbalance the machine causing the freezer to warm.

This is due to the fact that the thermostat that runs the entire machine is located in the fresh food section. When it reaches it's normal temperature it shuts the entire machine down.
In cold weather it could stay off for the best part of the dy, if not the entire day.

As well. on some model Frigidaire's, they makes a winterizing kit.
It is wired to the thermostat in a manner that heats the thermostat artificially in cold weather to cause it to cycle more.
Contact your local appliance parts house to see if they carry the kit for your machine.

Good day,
Yes. Domestic appliances will not work properly below approx 55 degrees.
The freezer suffers most simply because the machine runs rarely at 55 degrees and degrades as the temp goes lower.
They are designed to balance properly when in an environment where people live. Ideally 70 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit.
The machine is not broken.
Moving it inside, is the only solution.

Thank for using Fixya

Refrigerator/freezer in garage doesn't keep food frozen in winter

Yes there is a solution. You need to install a garage Thermostat Heater. This will trick the thermostat into thinking it is in a warm environment. This article will tell you why this is happening and the solution as I described. Sorry but for some reason I cannot post this as a link. Freezer is in garage and has worked up until now. Still runs, makes a humming sound and is cold but not freezing. Food is thawing.

If it is below freezing in your garage the freezer will not work.
No freezer except one Frigidaire freezer will work in the extreme cold.
This one has a button to switch it to a refrigerator in the winter and a freezer in the summer.

Freezer doesn't freeze in winter?

Domestic refrigerators nowadays are designed not to operate at temperatures less than 45 degrees. First, if it's 45 degrees in the house, people probably are not living there. 2nd, 45 degrees keeps food refrigerated. 3, if people are not living in a space, then they don't need to keep frozen food.

This is a result of the changes in refrigerants we've been going through since 1992.
If you want an outdoor freezer, buy one, and make sure it's designed to be used in a non conditioned space.

Frigidaire Freezer Runs Warm in Cold Weather

hi there the problem you have is that the temp in the garage is to low, the fridge part of your fridge freezer has priority and will only activate the compressor when req'd ie. in cold weather the fridge may not need to switch on the compressor for days at a time this is when the freezer will defrost.
All you can try doing is having some very low heating in your garage in the cold weather

hope this is of help.
