Is it the computerised kind? Then you should be able to change the stitch by scrolling through the number. Mine says Utility 1-28

A setting change while you are sewing should not happen. Sounds like you will have to take your machine in for service.

In most cases Laurie, with decorative stitches selected some machines can't sew in reverse. Your stitch length is too long or too short to make the decorative stitches sew correctly. So many things could be wrong. I'd need more info to get you going again.

Please explain to me how to adjust the numerical, digital buttons on my 7430 Singer sewing machine?

I just took a look at your user's manual, and boy--you're right, and I've been a computer systems engineer for about 30 years!

Actually, it's easier to figure out by DOING rather than looking at the description on page 35. Basically, selection is divided into two categories--utility, that is, stitches you would use for ordinary sewing, like stretch stitches, zigzag stitches, straight stitch, buttonholes, etc. That is located on the left column, with the arrow keys used for navigation in the middle. The display only shows 5 patterns at a time, so to see all of them, you have to keep pressing the down arrow. Once you have selected the stitch itself, you can then select the stitches width and length, and if it's available for that particular stitch, you can mirror (flip) the stitch, and use a twin needle (if it's available for that design)

The decorative and letter stitches are selected on the right column, and work he same way--they are displayed 5 at a time, etc, and selecting stitch width and length, mirror, and twin needle. However, additionally, you can choose to have the pattern sewn once (the default) or continuously.

I hope that helps!

My stitch length is tiny and will not change

When selecting a stich, there's a button with a triangle with one edge pointing down. There you can select Needle Position and Stitch Length. --PDF manual, page 23

The thread tension has no influence on the stitch length. It just adjusts, where needle thread and bobbin thread 'meet' inside the fabric. A too high tension means, the bobbin thread is pulled trough the fabric and can be seen on the upper (needle) side. A too low tension means, the bobbin thread is not pulled through the fabric and you can see the needle thread on the bobbin side.

Although you have selected a zigzag have you also set the stitch width and length manually as required? Some stitch types have restrictions on the width you can set so it's important to know which these are.If you don't have the instruction book it is available as a free download from Janome. Go to www.janome.com, click on the Machines tab then choose 'retired' and scroll down until you find the 6125QC - the link to the user guide is in the top right corner of the specifications tab.

Where do I change the stitching style from zig zag to straight stitch

If there is no speciafic selecting tool for straight and zigzag and assume it is a mechanical machine;
try making the stitch width zero, this is how most mechanical machines work; hope this works.

You should be able to buy an instruction manual from Janome or even on ebay.
