Question about Garden

I accidentally put regular gas instead of 1:50 mix in my toro snow blower. Ran for 20 mins then stopped, and that's when I discovered my mistake. Any advice would be appreciated (btw I am a FixYa client)

Thanks for the helpful advice. I will try the gas draining route first.. A few questions though.

You speak of an oil that doesn't thin out fast. Please explain. I thought all those mix oils were pretty much the same.

The Toro did not stop dead, but the engine would crank but not engage into run mode with the electric start and it seemed to run out of power after a few tries.

I did hear some chatter towards the end, before it completely gave out. I suppose that's what you refer to by "trusting my ears?"

Well, unfortunately I can't wait until July as you probably have heard of our East Coast winter storm! :>)

    Thanks a lot.

Hi,
Sorry to tell you this but you have probably ruined the engine. The comment you made about the rattle is probably the fact that something came apart insdie the motor. The only fix will be to take it apart, hone the cylinder walls, then install a new piston/w oversize rings, connecting rod and maybe a crank.

If the engine has not locked up yet you are lucky. You may be able to drain the tank by taking off the fuel line from the cutoff valve and then put the hose in a container and open the cutoff valve to drain the tank.

Get some 2 cycle oil which does not thin out as quickly as others. Mix up the oil and gas to 40:1. If the plug does not foul out you should be ok.

You probably put 5 years of wear on the bearings and piston pin. If you are big into maintanence you would want to check the bearings so you do not trash the crankshaft. Let your ears be your guide. July is a good month to rebuild a snowblower.

If you mean stopped as in the Toro Stopped while using it, unless you have a thermal switch it will need to be taken apart because something locked up.

Why does it run for 10 mins, then stops?

Loosen Gas cap and see if that helps. Many times the Gas tank Vent gets clogged. When engine runs, it creates a suction and starves the engine of gas.

OR
If the engine was stored with gas in it, sometimes the Rubber seat in the carburetor deforms and wont let the gas flow into the Carb Bowl at a fast enough rate to keep up with the running engine. The bowl empties (after 9 minutes) and the engine quits. Takes a while for the bowl to refill (5 minutes).

Toro troubleshooting

Use a funnel and tip out all the gas oil mixture. Then replace with a cup of straight gas. This should start and clear out the mix.
Run out until it stops and refill with correct gas oil Usually 8-1- see the label on the oil bottle.
