Question about Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 for PC

1 Answer

Hi there I have had Outlook running for many years. In 2008 I changed computers and ended up creating 2 pst files, Archive 1 for late 90?s to around 2007 and Archive 2 for subsequent archived emails. I auto archive monthly keeping the last 6 months in the ost and server. Yesterday morning the Outlook 2007 wouldn?t open. It advised a PST or archive file had an error and to use scanpst.exe to fix. It appears to have recreated 2 archives but they are now identical. The archives have been rearranged into folders under Lost and Found. The original filing structure has disappeared and some folders like Inbox and Sent Items are missing. Also I appear to have lost emails between 2007 and now. The scanpst.exe made backups. Can you help? Thanks, Peter

Scanpst.exe is designed to make simple repairs to damaged pst/ost files but frankly it's pretty rudimentary. You will most likely need to find the originals(or a backup from when the damage first ocurred and run them through a more comprehensive recovery program.

I can suggest a few but they require expense of your part. Before dropping a lot of money on the problem check with your IT staff or ISP if this is a personal account and see if the current OST file is still backed up on your exchange server. If so you should be able to redownload all the current emails.

If this is not the case or if they don't cover the whole time frame, locate your current OST/PST file and archives and I can direct you on how to recover more of the email. Unfortunately if the archives were damaged even the more comprehensive software may leave many of the emails in lost and found folders as it may not be able to rebuild the structure.

If you cannot find the current OST/PST file, let me know and I can also help you find it or recover it if it has been lost in the process.

For the recovery software I use in my recovery business look to

Click the second link to Outlook Mail recovery, this will take you to the download page which should offer you a demo version of the software. You can run it on the damaged files and see what is available for recovery. If it looks like the results are justified, buy the product and re-run it in the licensed mode to retrieve you email and archives.

If you have any questions or issues, reply back and I will be happy to assist you.

I don't like .pst and .ost

First one you may check and apply methods below, to read articles and guides, to use manual, and finally only in case nothing of these appears ineffective, then take a look at ost pst conversion

Outlook Inbox Repair Tool (Scanpst.exe) is a utility that you can use in this case to repair your damaged archive.pst. It is highly recommended that you backup the damaged PST first as running the tool can irreparably damage the file.
• 1. Quit the application
• 2. Scanpst.exe is a hidden file so make sure that the 'Show hidden files and folders' setting is enabled in the folder options
• 3. Click Start ' Search, or Find and type 'Scanpst.exe' in the Search box
• 4. Double-click to open the file and browse to the location of your damaged archive.pst
• 5. Click 'Start' to start the recovery process
• 6. Try to open the file in question again. The corruption problem should not exist.

Unable to recover outlook PST file

If the file is over 2Gb and this caused the corruption you could try the PST crop tool here:
Outlook Repair Toolbox - Outlook Repair Toolbox
Apparently running scandisk on the partition where the pst is stord can also fix it.
If the file is really important there are loads of tools on the net that claim to fix corrupt PSTs but you have to pay for them

My outlook data is lost after conversion

I believe the 'conversion' is actually an archive of your emails to the pst file. You can access your emails which are stored in your newly created pst file from your outlook program at File > Open > Open Outlook Data File for Outlook 2010, or look for a 'data' menu or tab on earlier Outlook programs.

I have read all the msg boards and am still not able to sync my iphone 3gs to outlook. does it have anthing to do with running Vista? I used to work then notice that it changed

Vista shouldn't have anything to do with it, unless your using a 3rd party software to connect it.
First thing, Update iphone to latest version.
Update outlook 2007 using windows update.
The resent update to the iphone firmware and itunes fixed the problemof things not moving from iphone back to outlook.
BEFORE the fix for the iphone , to get an event to show up back in outlook , you would need to make it a recurring event on the iphone starting and ending on the one day ...
to test if thts the problem you have , make a new calendar event in your phone and make it recurring, starting and ending on the same day.
sync, then check outlook.
Before this update to get things working I needed to do the following...
1) backup your outlook .PST file. 2) rename and move the existing pst file, and create a new one.. 3)import the contacts 4) import calender events, (not recurring ones) 5)sync.

Outlook pst file creation and export

All your mail, your contacts, your calendars, and almost every other detail of your life is in Outlook. To make sure you don't lose all this in case of a hard disk crash or some other disaster, you can create backup copies of your Personal Folders (.pst) files — that's where Outlook stores all the essential data.
Back Up or Copy Your Outlook Mail, Contacts and Other Data To create a copy of your mail, contacts, calendar and other data in Outlook for backup or copying:
  • Go to your Outlook folder in Windows Explorer.
  • Highlight all files ending in ".pst".
    • Make sure in particular your selection includes "outlook.pst" and "archive.pst".
  • Select Edit | Copy from the menu to copy them.
  • Open the folder where you want to put your backup copies in Windows Explorer.
    • Ideally, this will be on another computer, on a removable disk stored far away from your home, somewhere on the Internet, or at least on a different hard disk.
  • Select Edit | Paste from the menu to paste your .pst files to the backup location
Restore from Your Outlook Backup Your backup copy of Outlook data is now in place, ready to be restored when you need it.

Restore Outlook Mail, Contacts and Other Data from a Backup To restore your mail, contacts and other data from a backup copy of an Outlook PST file:
  • Select File | Import and Export... from the menu in Outlook.
  • Select Import from another program or file.
  • Click Next.
  • Highlight Personal Folder File (PST).
  • Click Next again.
  • Now use the Browse button to select the backup copy of the PST file you want to recover from your backup location.
  • Make sure Replace duplicates with items imported is selected.
  • Click Next.
  • Finish the import process with Finish.
Usually, the default import settings work fine, but you may want to tweak them to suit your needs.
check this important link also where you can download a software to backup your outlook..
I hope you are satisfied with Fixya technical support.
It will be highly appreciated if you could take a minute and provide us your feedback..
