If the laptop has a slot on either side that is a PCMCIA slot then you can purchase a USB card to put in there which will give you 2 additional USB ports.

This divise can perform faster if u can connect it to a high-speed usb devise! And what is a usb2 devise

USB = Universal Serial Bus and when it first entered the market the maximum speed was 1,5Mbit/s (this was called USB 1.0).
After a while they upgraded to usb 1.1 (12Mbit/s) and then to USB 2.0 (480Mbit/s). This is where we are now. Your computer is able to handle USB2.0, however if you have an old printer or something else, which was designed when the standard was USB 1.0, the maximum speed for that device is 1,5Mbit/s.
If you plug a newer device into a "slow" usb port (for example your usb port =1.0 and device supports usb 2.0) , then you will get information saying : "this device can perform faster...."

expect usb3.0 soon with 4,8Gbit/s

Usb ports no longer work...

Have you tried a restore to an earlier date, choose a date on which the ports were still active. Click start, click all programs, click accessories, click system tools, click system restore, choose restore my computer to an earlier time, select date. You can also roll back drivers by clicking start, click control panel, click system, click hardware, click devise manager, click on universal serial bus controllers, rt click on your usb port if it is there and choose update driver. Good luck.

You could try uninstalling the USB items in Device Manager and allow them to be reinstalled. Also verify USB is enabled in the BIOS.

Usb for P4VMM2

USB is powered by a current limited 5.0 volts supply. Normally even if there is a short circuit, the port is well protected but if a higher voltage is applied from outside (defetive USB device) the port can be damaged. There is a very small fuse or fusible resistor in the PCB. Unless it is burned, it is difficult to find. You can try to look near the area of the USB socket. If you were lucky enough to find it, you can replace it. Another possible solution - connect a USB hub with external power supply to one of the USB ports in your PC. If the datalines of our internal USB is still OK, then you can use this HUB. The power will come from the externel supply. Connect the USB devices on the hub and not on the PC.
