The screen is very dark and I am unable to see any image (although there does appear to be some very faint lighter spots, but these are not really discernable)

I don't think this is the problem as the unit has only been used once or twice and not in extreme heat conditions

    Hi Rylee

This is not a projection TV - I thought I had indicated that the unit is a Shinco Portable DVD Player - model SDP-1282. Thanks Tim

    Any other ideas ?

  • Tim Benson Feb 06, 2010

I have tried cleaning it a few times and the result doesn't seem any better.

Hi, need a little more info. what is the model # of set? Knowing that will let us know the type of set it is and possible causes for failure.Have you tried more than 1 input to see if it happens there too? if you hit the menu button for the tv , is the menu any brighter? thanks

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. Heat is the number one enemy of electronics, and these sets operate hot. This problem is caused by the power supply being overloaded. This is often caused by failed convergence ICs. I don’t think the issue is with the power supply of the unit as the sound is coming fine from the unit. This model of TV has over 3,000 parts which include millions of transistors inside the integrated circuits. Over time the capacitors will change value, leak and become defective. Resistors will change value and burn. This will cause other components to become defective. This can has a domino effect and cause other parts to fail. Replacing one defective part may make the TV operate for a short time but the part will fail again since if the parts that caused the failure to begin with are not replaced. The typical cost to get this fixed by a pro is about $300 - and it doesn't mean that he/they will do a job better than you do. The parts are less than $100 (about $20-$30 for the IC's) if you want to do it yourself. Replacing only the IC's MAY solve the problem; however, many people have also had blown resistors requiring replacement. Why would you ask should you replace both of the IC's if only one is shot?! If one is shot the other one is not far away and for that little price of the chips it worth changing them both at the same time. Also the convergence board should be checked for cracked solder. If you replace the ICs and the resistors are shot, the ICs may blow again almost immediately, meaning you may have to do the repair twice.

Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks

It was mentioned as Projection TV so I provided you the solution assuming it as Projection TV, as its the DVD player Tim you'll need to run the lens cleaning disc in it to clean the lens. I am saying this as not using the DVD Player often leads to a dark picture, if lens cleaning disc wont help then you have to open the dvd player and then clean the lens with a Q-tip dipped in Alcohol. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

    Thanks

Cant turn brightness up on screen

IS the screen really dark and can you see a "ghost image" when you tilt the laptop back, looking along the edges? (from an acute angle)
IF you do see a faint image, your laptop screen's power inverter may be bad, or the screen's "back light" may be bad... Take it to a shop to have them verify this issue. Hope this helps.

A125 monitor is dark

If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LED flashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faulty inverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. Please click on this link and follow my instructions to identify the fault and possible fix :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3598095-faulty_laptop_lcd_screen

Can the lamp be replaced for a Polaroid TLX03210B

You likely have a LCD set there which may likely use a back light inside to light the image, get the room as dark as you can and with a flashlight illuminate the screen from a angle, with set on if you can see the faint image on the screen of the program you have a Backlight issue'

1. Voltage not there or not being switched on for backlight.

2. Actual back light bad.

If the image can be seen with a flashlight one of the above is the issue and your "picture will appear very faintly" also suggests this.

Spots all over screen

We will presume you have a DLP set that uses a lamp of some sort(no brand or model indicated here).

spots or dead pixels are usually a damaged optical light engine--there are ones where more and more appear.

A faint possible reason is dust is inside the optical light engine--seen it a few times but the spots are usually golf ball in size----high pressure air applied to the vents in the engine with set on in a dark room usually clears that up.

Dark LCD screen. Very faint image.

Internally it has a inverter board which go bad sometimes or due to heat sometimes get unpluged. So you will have to open it make sure when you do there is no power going to it.Look at the wires make sure they are snug and try again.
good Luck

My Acer Aspire 3000 is really dark and dim

If the brightness is dull even when connected to the mains, it maybe that your back lighting is faulty on the screen and you will need a qualified repairer, although it may be worth looking at a new notebook depending on the cost.
