Question about Maytag MBB1956GES Bottom Freezer Refrigerator
Hi and welcome to Fixya. You mentioned the fridge stopped working for about an hour. That is about the time that it takes for a defrost cycle to complete. If something had somehow fallen onto the defrosting element it could actually partially cook during each defrost cycle. The element is covered by a glass tube and the tube gets hot during the defrost cycle.
You will not be able to see this without removing the access cover to the evaporator coils.
Cover is item 4 this link:
In back of the freezer on the very bottom there is a drain that you can not see due to the internal evaporator coil access cover of the freezer compartment. If there is debris in that drain everytime the unit defrosts it can also re-generate the odor.
Check item 3 of this drawing and make sure it is clear.
My suspicions are in the first recomendation above more than the drain.
Also to rid the internal smell.... get a "box" of Arm and Hammer Baking Soda, tear the top at least half way back and place it in your Food section. It will over time rid your unit of unwanted odors.
