About .030". Remove the muffler if you can and look to see if the piston is all scored up. You may be using garbage gas or mix oil as well.

On a 08 vstar 1000 does the oil light work on pressure or level

oil lights work off pressure , check wire connection and oil level coz if there isnt enough oil in the engine it can pump oil around and end up with not enough in the sump ! whats the quality of the oil , when was it last replaced ?

Automatic oiler has never worked well even when saw was new, chain never gets enough oil. Should I use a lighter grade oil, or what else should I check?

Take the bar off the saw and check that the hole that the oil comes out hasn't become blocked with saw dust. It sometimes happens also that when you are filling the saw with oil, shavings and saw dust can get into the tank and this can block the pipes connecting the tank to the hole that the oil comes out. Although it isn't really recommended, I have used waste engine oil regularly for oiling the saw. This works ok as long as there aren't any lumps in it.

I installed new bar and chain .cleaned every thing .assembled saw filled up chain oil thank. started sarted saw ,chain still not oiling.

Without knowing what saw you have it is hard to exact directions. On most saws their is an adjusting screw on the bottom side of saw by oil tank and chain that adjusted the flow rate of oil. If you can locate that try rurning it one turn clockwise and run saw for a short period and see if you are getting any more oil.If youare sure you have the right screw I would continue adjusting . If it doesn''t seem to work I would remove screw and make sure there is no blockage and that oil is present. For proper operation you need to keep a light film of oil on it. If you aren't getting enough oil you will cause chains to overheat, possibly ruining chain and bar. Hope this help you. Thanks

I have an old and very heavy cast iron Delta jig saw. I need to replace the oil in the lower end sump. What type oil is needed?

generally any machine oil will do, The oil needs to be lighter than motor oil, but thicker than pneumatic tool oil. I would bet that compressor oil would work, it is relatively inexpensive and I believe thin enough for that application

MY RYOBI 14 INCH SAW IS OVER-OILING AND SPRAYING OIL ALL OVER THE PLACE , IS THERE AN AJUSTMENT?

At the bottom of the saw you should find the oil pump. There will be a flat head screw that adjusts it. Be sure that you are using a good quality bar oil and not a motor oil. Adjust it in small increments. You can easily burn the bar and chain if it doesn't get enough bar oil.

Bar sprocket smokes, gets hot spot

Sounds like you're not getting enough oil to the chain. Basically you've got an oil pump, pickup and filter involved in getting oil from the resovior to the chain/bar. If you cleaned the obvious area and the chain is not coated with oil, you may have a clog further up (inside) the oil delivery mechanisms. Also, drain the oil from the tank, and see if you can "blow" air through there. With the saw running & pointed down, you should be able to see oil on the ground being slung off the chain, if not, you are not getting enough oil to the chain.
