Hi. Our refrigerator has an odor that is fishy or ammonia. Strongest when the fan kicks on. Practically everything has been taken out to see if it could be food related. It is not. Any thoughts?

Leak detector

First off refrigerators dont use ammonia. A gas detector like you may have probably uses catalytic response to detect flammable vapors. These detectors are the least expensive. If you have ammonia that is used for fertilizer like farmers use, it may detect it because anhydrous ammonia is combustible. (not flammable). Ammonia has a very strong odor though and that should be your first indication of a leak in an ammonia system. Ammonia that is used for cleaning does not have the same properties as the industrial ammonia that is used in other applications. Therefore it will not be detected.

Shut it off and get it checked. Ammonia is dangerous as I am sure you are aware. Ammonia smell is an indication of a leaking cooling unit. Time for a new fridge. Sorry.

Not cooling

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. Everything you stated is the nuts and bolts of externally enticing the unit to cool. Given the symptoms your describing it seems that there is no coolant in the cooling system or there is a total blockage of the coolant. A blockage can occur at the capillary tube connection of the drier. The unit uses ammonia to cool and if it had leaked ammonia usually you note a not so wonderful odor of ammonia. The only way to know for sure is to have the coolant pressures checked in an operating condition. No pressure = no cooling. A tech would install a permanent saddle coolant connection on the lines and verify the pressures with refrigeration gauges.
Given the symptoms your describing there really is no other alternative.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Fishy odor

Make sure you wash the refrigerator and freezer with a baking soda and water solution.
Then, place a few charcoal briquets in the fridge and freezer areas.
The charcoal will absorb odors. It works wonders.
In one month, you can remove the briquets and scrape the outer layer off to renew the usefulness of the charcoal.

Fishy odor, how to clean or remove odor

This is a trick my wife uses when she stores fish in the refrigerator. Put about 2 cups of vinegar in the refrigerator and leave it there for 4-6 hours.

Let me know that works for you and please rate this!

Odor in GE side by side Fridge

Sounds like mold.  I'd try Lysol or one of the other products that claims to treat the odor cause in the air.  Spray a quantity into the empty fridge and freezer and turn it on.  Let the fans spread the stuff around. Try to find the internal vents which seem to pull air into the coils to spray into.
