Question about Philips DVP642 DVD Player

1 Answer

I have a Phillips DVP642 and it will play some DVD's perfectly fine and others get stuck on "Loading" and never play. Seems totally random.

There may be a problem with the lens. I would first use a DVD disc cleaner. This cleaner looks just like a disc with some extra little brushes on its surface. Some DVD cleaner kits even come with supplies to clean and modify scratches on your discs. You may have dust on the lens. Also look at each DVD you load into your player, if it has fingerprints, dust, or a scratch it will not load. Click on the link below to view cleaner kit:

CAN'T OPEN DRAWER

Hello
There is a motor along with belt to control the disc tray for every DVD player. If this belt or motor [loading motor] has trouble, the tray won't come out or get into. Check these for perfectness.

Stuck dvd and no power

I fixed this problem in my DVP642 by replacing a capacitor on the main power board where the power chord hooks in. Take the top cover off (after unplugging player). You'll be able to locate the bad capacitor on the circuit board located on the very right. Look for location marked c316 on the circuit board. A bad capacitor will be bulged up on top. The capacitor you're looking for will be a black barrel shape with an aluminum top, this aluminum top will be bulged up or leaking on the circuit board. Replace this capacitor by desoldering the two leads into the board and replacing with an identical part you can pick up at Radio Shack for a couple dollars. My repair for this identical problem was a success. The blinking light is the tip off for this particular problem on these Phillips models.

Tray is not opening

To open the tray this is not a perfect fix, but it will allow to use it. After the unit is powered on: 1)Hit the "Open/Close" button 2)Wait a while (you will get the timing down with practice) 3)Tap gently, yet briskly with fingertips at area in the attached pic, that the red arrow points to I think the problem is that the tray becomes unbalanced somehow. Because when a DVD is in, the drive opens fine, only when there is no disc do you have to tap on the unit.

Won`t play disney movies

Apparently this is a known issue. Some dvp642 players have compatibility issues with some of the Disney DVD's. A firmware update might help. There is a discussion of this at: http://www.videohelp.com/forum/archive/t317193.html

Random no audio

I have had this happen with this particular brand frequently. I have it plugged in to a power "strip" or surge protector. I find that if I turn the strip off then on again, it resets and fixes the problem.
