Question about Canon PowerShot S3 IS Digital Camera
There are 2 different types of zoom on an S3IS camera. Optical and digital. Optical zoom is all that is needed for great pictures. If you turn on digital zoom you will be able to take pictures at further distances but they will be bad pictures. Optical is all you should need to take great pictures.

Digital Zoom is best ignored in any camera it simply blows up a section of an image already taken, You can do that far better with an image editor in the computer. As for the Optical Zoom - it does indeed seem to be repair time- As it is only a year and half old- may be Canin will be sympathetic and offer a cheap swap out.
