I have had the hard drive cleaned, re-installed new Operating system - Windows 7, updated software and my computer is getting slower and slower again. I did all of this becuase it was slow - any thoughts?

Slow computers are sometimes due to bad hard drives. Run a hard drive diagnostic test on your computer to make sure the hard drive isn't bad. Download this hard drive diagnostic from Western Digital: http://support.wdc.com/product/download.asp?groupid=612&sid=3&lang=en

Also, make sure you have enough RAM to support your growing number of installed programs. Download and run this system scanner to check if you can add more ram to your PC:

I have A30 8199 with initial 2 ram card of 256 for total of 512 meg. I purchased 2 new cards of 512 each for total or 1Gig. I am on Win XP home and have all updates to XP with Bios of 5/10/05. When I...

Looking over at crucial.com it says that your A30 can use PC2700 and PC3200 DDR. Maybe go other there and see if your new ram matches what they sell. I know it's not much but maybe a start.

I have a eMachines T3646 Motherboard MCP61SM2MA-RS2H and I wanted to upgrade the Ram on it. I was told that this type of ram was compatible ( Crucial 1GB 240-Pin 128x64 DDR2 PC2-6400 CL6 ) I stuck two of...

Not sure exactly as to why you can run the one, and not the other, but I am familiar with 'speed compatibility' issues, especially with Crucial RAM (which is still good memory, BTW)... I looked up your computer's memory specs on this site, and they're in the biz of selling, but pretty reliable as they are independent. Check out where it shows the speed at PC2-5300--any time you want to upgrade, you try and match the upper limits of that particular characteristic, so maybe it'll run one Crucial stick at '6400', but not two, since--even though most RAM packages 'say' they're 'backwardly compatible, speed-wise', many of the better brands sell RAM that, when installed in pairs, run at their upper speeds, or 'a certain speed', we'll say... So--again, this is easy--try a pair running at the slower speed. The best news is, if you bought the Crucial RAM new (as I suspect you did), most retailers will return your money on hardware purchases within 30 days afterward.

Meh. Run a registry cleaning program (or the free Anvir process monitor to find out what's eating memory) and see if it doesn't clear up; though I'm inclined to say you should install 2 to 4GB (even after-market stuff since it's DDR that only has to run 200MHz, (to feed one 800MHz bus)) and see if the thing's new performance level improves your life enough to cover the cost. Easy victory either way.

Did you remove the "old" RAM, or did you add the "new" RAM to the old RAM?

Try using your computer with ONLY the "new" RAM installed.

How can the bios be updated?

I recommend that you go to the Crucial website and perform the automatic scan function. This will identify your machine and tell you what upgrades are available, taking into account what memory the machine already has and the maximum that the chipset can support.

URL for the site is:

or if that does not work just google 'crucial memory scan'

Upgrading ram on laptop, new ram not recognized.

remove the bios battery for a few seconds...and place it back on ...this will make it see the new ram memory modules...if you are sure they are compatible ..they will work .....in fact ..the ddr1 333 512 M is more that compatible with your system and it will work after you remove the battery ...\ my recommendation is to reinstall a clean operation system after you boot up ...and format the C partition too...this have to be done after memory changes to get the max out of them ..

Slow P4 2 Ghz PC

a huge ram not only make ur system run like a horse..itz a bad idea..the frequency n clock speed of ur ram+m/b+cpu must also match..!!..
i guess ur using a licensed and 'updated' antivirus..
howevr, hv a glance ovr the software strength..look for startup items (the programs loaded during startup)..download n install n run 'Statup Control Panel'..
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,7976-order,4-c,desktop/description.html
and microsoft kb890830..remove the unnecessary boot item(s) or do post me a complete list of startup item that the Startup CPL is showing (in itzevery tab), i'll guide u..
also u may use 'Advanced System Care Pro' to fix all at a time..
ur hdd is detoriating/faulty/bad..see if itz making any humming noise (like 'kirr kirr' or 'tuk tuk')..in such case u gotta b replace ur hdd..also scan for bad sectors..do a through disk defragmentation..
always better to get supervision frm ur system admin/vendor....

Ram Memory

I did this 2 days ago on my gf's aspire 5315-2153 (walmart special $348). the underside panel has four tiny screws which must be removed and then the fun begins. The plastic panel is large and doesn't want to be removed. After 20 minutes of cursing, i was able to get it out with two hands and a small screwdriver. The plastic panel has about 7-8 tabs which also hold it in place. The original two memory modules must be removed and the two new ones installed in their place. i bought crucial memory from newegg.com (CT2KIT12864AC667) for $17 delivered (took a week to get) which was much cheaper than buying it direct from crucial.com Save the old memory modules just in case you have a problem with the new ones. After putting them in, I restarted the computer and it booted up fine. No BIOS changes or any of that were necessary. So for $17 and about 30 minutes, this lappy is now running strong with 2gb instead of 1gb. Initial impression is that it boots up faster and shuts down faster but that is about it in terms of improvement!!!
