Drive Belt Installation on a Whirlpool Duet or Kenmore Elite Front Loader

This advice is on how to replace the drive belt on Whirlpool Duet and Kenmore Elite front loader washing machines. To replace the drive belt on a Whirlpool Duet washer, follow these steps:

1. Unplug the washer and turn the washing machine around so you can access the back panel. Remove the rear panel by locating and loosening the screws around the perimeter of the panel.

2. Loop the drive belt on the drive motor pulley with the ribbed side on the pulley. Leave a one-groove gap between the belt and the end of the pulley.

3. Take both hands and pull straight up on the belt and place on the drum pulley beginning on the left hand side.

4. Hold the belt firmly in place and slowly turn the drum pulley to the right while holding the belt in place. The belt will eventually align and hold in place on the drum pulley.

NOTE: This may require some effort to get the belt in place.

If you have any questions, or are uncertain if these steps apply to your washer (some newer model Maytag front loaders are now manufactured by Whirlpool) please provide me with a model number and I can let you know if these steps apply. I hope this information is helpful.

Drum belt snapped

unsure of your model here, but generally a drum belt change will require loosening the motor supports, putting the new belt on, then tightening the motor to correct belt tension.

Drive Motor

The dryer drive motor turns the drum and the blower wheel to exhaust the air. If the dryer stops the motor might be defective. If the dryer stops and the dryer motor makes a humming noise there might be something caught in the blower wheel, or the drum might be binding. Try removing the belt from the motor and checking the blower wheel for obstructions. Also try rotating the drum by hand with the belt off, it should rotate freely. If the drum doesn't turn freely, determine what is causing it to bind. The dryer motor can't be tested easily. If the drum turns freely and the blower wheel is clear, and yet the dryer still keeps stopping mid-cycle the motor may be defective. it will need to be replaced. It is not serviceable.

Drum Roller Axle

This dryer has drum support rollers. There will always be two supporting the rear of the drum, and on some models there may be two supporting the front of the drum. The rollers must spin freely to work properly. If the roller axles are worn out the rollers may not spin freely which can overload the motor and the dryer stops. If the dryer stops mid-cycle, remove the belt and spin the drum, it should spin freely. If not, check the rollers and roller shafts.

Drum Roller

This dryer has drum support rollers. There will always be two supporting the rear of the drum, and on some models there may be two supporting the front of the drum. The rollers must spin freely to work properly. If they are worn out or start binding the motor can get overloaded and the dryer stops. If the dryer stops mid-cycle, check to be sure the drum turns freely with the belt removed. If not, check the rollers. Do not lubricate the rollers or roller shaft, lubrication will attract lint and cause the roller bearings to wear out faster. If the rollers don't turn freely, replace them. The roller shaft can often be reused, unless it has worn down. Clean the shaft thoroughly before installing the new rollers.

Drum Slide, Glide, or Pad

The front of the dryer drum is supported by small pieces of plastic-like material. As the drum rotates, it slides on these plastic pieces. If the dryer stops mid-cycle, it may be that one or more of these plastic slides or glides has worn out. When they wear out the drum can start binding and put strain on the motor. The motor then shuts down and the dryer stops. Check the glides for wear and replace as needed.

Drum Bearing

The drum bearing supports the rear of the dryer drum. Over time this bearing will wear out and may cause several different problems. If the dryer stops during the cycle it may be that this drum bearing has worn out and is putting too much strain on the motor. If the belt is removed and the drum spins freely, the drum bearing is probably not worn out. If the drum bearing is worn out, there may be some grinding or squealing, and the drum will be hard to turn.

Dryness Control Board

The dryness control board shuts off the dryer when the clothes have reached the level of dryness selected by the user. If the dryer stops too early, the dryness control board might be defective. This is not very common and other possibilities should be checked first.

Water fills in drum but does not spin or move

You will have to open your Washing Machine to view the Drum Motor and Drum assembly. It sounds like your belt has broke or is worn out, or your Drum Motor is not turning. If the Drum Motor is not turning, you may have a bad Drum Motor or Motor Control Board. A trained professional should be contacted to perform these repairs if you are unsure about the repair process.

I have a Kenmore Gas Dryer (model 11087471810) that threw its belt. I have the replacement belt and know how to replace that. When I opened the bottom of the dryer, I noticed the Idler pulley sitting at...

The idler pulley/tensioner fastens into two slots in the base of the dryer to the left of the motor . The belt goes around the drum then through the idler to the motor pulley ,you have to make a loop with the excess belt and feed it through the idler pulley, i normally pull the plastic pulley towards the right side of the dryer to give enough belt to go around the motor pulley then let the plastic pulley rest on the backside of the belt. do not turn the drum too much as you may pull the belt back off .

Motor/Drum doesn't turn/spin & belt appears to be OK

With the belt off can you spin the motor freely by hand? If no then the bearings are froze and the motor has to be replaced. If yes and the motor will not start when power is applied then the motor needs to be replaced. If it starts without the belt on but not with, then the drum is bound somewhere and has to be freed.

I push the start button and the dryer makes a humming sound and the drum doesn't turn nor does the dryer turn on

Humming indicates motor is getting weak. If you look in the back compartment of your dryer you can probably see the belt. You can relieve the belt tension and then take the belt off the motor pulley. Once you do this, make sure the belt is out of the way and push the start button. If the motor turns it means it couldn't push the weight and is too weak to run. It make not turn without the belt on it either but you will hear if the sound is coming from the motor. In either case you need a new dryer or new motor if the dryer is pretty new.

I have replaced the belt on my Hotpoint vdt00 dryer but the belt seems to pull the drum on to the motor causing a scraping noise and its hard to turn around. their dosnt apear to be a bearing or anything...

look inside the drum is there three screws on the very back wall of drum, there is a bearing there, remove the belt, slide the drum forward and look at the back of the drum, there should be a shaft sticking out that slides into a slot that looks like a U in the back wall, that is the rear bearing that you get in a kit if you hear a loud squeaking sound that's the problem,if you sent the model number i could of told you the part number

Dryer problem

I could be wrong, but I don't know of a dryer that DOESN'T use a belt to turn the drum. If the motor is turning on, and the drum is not spinning, more than likely your suspicions are correct and the belt is broken. You can find a replacement at searspartsdirect.com. Just type in the model number you have provided and look under the "Tumbler" heading for item number 5 (part #341241). The website also offers some helpful exploded view illustrations to assist in part location and installation.

Repairclinic.com carries the part at a cheaper price (item number 529597). Use the part number provided by the Sears website for your search criteria. Repairclinic also offers dryer belt installation diagrams. Just click on the "Repair Help" link at the top of the page and look under the "Special Features" section on the following page for "Dryer Belt Diagrams". Magic Chef uses diagram F. I hope you find this information helpful. Let me know if you have any questions.
