It sounds like the bulb is about to fail. That is something you can replace yourself. There are many sellers on the internet or you can call 1-800-samsung.

If its a Sony and a DLP a lot of times just before the lamp life ends it gives a darker or dim picture---if it gets dim enough set will shut down.

The gsrbsge disposal blades sound like they are hitting together when I turn on the switch. Does it need to be replaced (it's only about 3 yrs old) or how can I repair it?

I would first remove the unit and try to clear any foriegn debri. The blades should rocker against outer walls. You can leave plugged in, or the electric connected. Remember to keep your hand out of dispsal, use screwdriver of any type. Be Safe, Mastatech

HLS5087 DLP - Samsung Hi - on my DLP 1/3 of the screen is very dim - almost black - it's about 2 yrs old and of course out of warranty -

You probably have a bad Light Tunnel. Samsung has a Tech bulliten and recall for this defect and might pay for the repair. Call 1-800-SAMSUNG and ask for the ECR Group and explain the symptom. If they resists to pay for repair mention the recall.

Samsung DLP Tv

it's about 3000 to 5000 hrs. on the bulb this translates to about 3 to 5 yrs. of normal use. it can, however, be greatly reduced by the number of on/off conditions. lamps need to cool down that is why the fans run longer after shut down.
obviously if the TV doesn't turn on that can be lamp. weak or dim picture is another sign.
