Question about OEM Systems Car Audio & Video

I have a 2004 Volvo XC90 with a malfunctioning Stereo. Dealer told me a price of $1600.00 to replace the radio ECU. If I can find a new ECU for cheaper, where can I find the place to replace the ECU? Is it behind the stereo in dash?

It needs a new head unit(stereo)or repair, sombody correct me if i am wrong but the ECU is the engine computer and nothing to do with the radio head unit and dosent controll it, so i think the dealer is trying to rip you off. Have a look around the for a independent stereo dealer and ask them how much they would charge to repair the unit for you if they can, if not have them order a new one and install it for you. You will find you will save alot of money.

You may be able to get the parts online do a search for your make and model, and see what parts are available, going direct to the dealer is going to cost alot because they think you cant go anywhere else.

Hello John. I do not know where you live but I recommend that you look in the yellow pages for an auto electric shop or an auto stereo shop. Almost all stores that sell stereo equipment install or know of nearby shops that do. I agree that the $1600 price is high. Good luck with it. Joe

Hi everybody! So I have a 2004 Volvo XC90 SUV and I was told that the heater core needs replacement. I can't afford the dealer prices and was wondering if this can be a DIY project?

Most current cars require removal of the dashboard to get to the HVAC box, which must be removed and opened to get to the heater core. My suggestion would be to get a repair manual (Haynes, Chilton) for your car from an auto parts store. That should give you step-by-step instructions on how to do this BIG job (that's why Volvo wants $1000 to do it). You can also search YouTube to see if there are any relevant videos, but I haven't seen too much on Volvos on YouTube.

How do I replace the firebox in a 2004 XC90 Volvo?

I have never heard of a "firebox." I do not know what the dealer is referring to. Is there a part number or alternative description? (The dealer may be taking you for a ride... beware!)
He may be referring to the "flame trap," which is basically a thermal barrier.

Hi, i have a volvo xc90 from 2004. the radio shuts down after driving about 5 min from a cold start. the parking assistance will also not work, as no signal can be heard from the radio. do i have to change...

I work at a Volvo dealership. If it is the icm that is causing those problems the only other possibility is that there may be corrosion on the wiring harness that plugs into the icm. That will cause loss of signal from the icm. Possibility of corrosion just being cleaned off which would be very cheap, if it has gotten down into the wires the harness would have to be replaced or repaired, not sure on cost. If there is no corrosion anywhere to be found then the icm is the only option, no tricks or loopholes to avoid replacing it. If the icm does have to be replaced I would highly recommend using the dealership and brand new icm. I have read reviews of people claiming that they have purchased used ones from eBay or junkyards but I have never seen it work myself because the icm comes clean with no software on it from Volvo then a dealership will install icm and perform the software download once it is hooked up to your vehicle, this links that part with your car, so yours should not work in someone else's car and someone else's should not work in yours. Always be careful with major electronics for your car in the future as well most of the complicated modules in these cars are designed the same way, vehicle specific programming that makes used ones not work or not work properly. Best way to tell for anything in the future is if you are given an estimate from a dealership and it shows software needed with the part buy from the dealership. If it shows no software needed your usually good to buy an aftermarket or used part that will be cheaper. Side note I have an xc90 that needs the icm replaced asked my technicians if there was any way around it, checked for corrosion and found none, he told me there is no other way, and even with my employee discount the price still hurts. So good luck and pray for corrosion.

Light in xc90 radio is out. Can I fix this myself?

I had the same problem. LCD on Stereo can't be fixed and Volvo said it would be $1000 for a new unit.
Bought an aftermarket Alpine BT103 (includes bluetooth) for $219 on Crutchfield.com. They included a face plate free!
Install (including Ipod cable) was another $150.
You may get an airbag service light after the install.
Take it to the Volvo dealer and have it reset.
