Question about Dell E173FP 17" LCD Monitor

Is there an easy fix for my Dell LCD monitor? Is it just a cord issue or is there something that can be fixed with the monitor itself?

Friend...I can appreciate your frustration with folks who don't make themselves clear about the problems they are having with a certain piece of equipment...but I don't appreciate your 'tone' towards me in the way you responded to my request for help in your reply...I would suggest that you not use capital letters when responding to people...it comes off like you are irritated and condescending...which is NOT good people skills...now that out of the way -

I was given the monitor so I don't know how old the monitor is, nor any other info about it.

What I am experiencing is the following and quite simple...the on button blinks and the screen blinks and does not boot up to display at all...no smoke, nothing out of the ordinary except that it blinks and doesn't boot up to display

Thus far, I tried two different power cords and two different connection cords from the screen to the main box...no change.

I will look at the general fix suggestions and let you know if any work, otherwise, any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks

richthrone, Sorry that I come off that way. Don't really want to do that to anyone. If the lcd panel never lights-up to display the informatoin sent to it we will consider monitor to be black and blank. Can you do a test of your main box with known good monitor attached to prove you are sending good vga signal to monitor? If you connect E173 to previously booted pc do you see the WIN-desktop appear on screen when you push the Dell on/off button? If you see nothing then shine bright flashlight about 1 inch from screen at different angles and look closely for a very faint image of what you think should be there. If you still don't see image the "switch-mode-power-supply" could be in full shutdown mode. If you do see a faint image, then SMPS is in partial shutdown mode, but able to supply 5 volts to the vga-lcd interface board which sends 1's and 0's to lcd panel for display. SMPS have two outputs 5v and 12-13v dc. If SMPS detects fault with the "cold-cathode-fluorescent-lamp" electronic ballast circuit(the inverter) it will go into full or partial shutdown mode. Rich, get back to me if you need more info. lmistyrel on aim. and fixya 12fixlouie.

richthrone, Hi there, 12fixlouie here. There could be something wrong but you did NOT tell me WHAT is wrong. Tell me some HISTORY of your CCFL back-lit LCD unit. How old is it and how many "ON" hours does it have? Was it working fine one day, and then you smelled smoke or were the colors all messed-up? Do you think that it has "BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH syndrome? Do another comment to your original post with your unit's symptom. Read my FIXYA profile for more info and if something you read matches your symptom, make a note of exactly which one it is, and the file page number where you found it. 12fixlouie

It has bad caps ..plain and simple ... there are 6 of them that go bad and you may lose the 5volt line or the 12 volt line or both which results in A. no display at all OR the display does work and you can see with the flashlight trick OR B. both lines down which will result in no image nor any backlight at all ... as far as the 6 caps ? i will have to look at my notes and then will post locations and mfd / voltage of the failed caps..

This is a backlight problem. The picture is there but there is no light from behind the LCD screen. It could be due to faulty capacitors, which are easy to replace. It could be a faulty Inverter transformer, which is harder to fix but he backlight controller board can usually be replaced at a reasonable price. If you have soldering experience you may be able to replace the faulty capacitors - look for capacitors with bulging tops.
Repalcing the inverter board in a job for someone with electronics experience. You can buy a universal inverter board for about £15 to £20 from e-bay.
20 inch monitors can be bought for about £100 to £150 so you need to decide whether it is economical to repair.

The monitor has a power supply problem, if you are very lucky it might be a fuse. To access remove back cover follow the power cord to the power module and there should be a fuse close by, if changing fuse fails, replace monitor "repairs not cost effective"

The dreaded blinking green led without a display, means that the backlight circuit has failed on this monitor. Typicalll the transistors that drive the backlight transformers short out and fail. I have fixed this on my monitors twice. Very common failure for this monitor and can be fixed quite easy if you know how to use a soldering iron and a meter. They even sell a repair kit on ebay that provides parts to repair this monitor. Just go to ebay and search e17fpb repair and to find it. Hope this helps.

DELL 1907FPT WITH PINK DISPLAY

Hello,

The picture board on your monitor is bad, since it goes off after it is turned on and the power led or button is on, it means the picture board of your monitor has developed fault.

The best thing for you to do now is to take the monitor to a local repairer within your vicinity or any service center to help with the replacement of the picture board because the fault is not something you can fix yourself, in order not to complicate issues.

Take care.

Dell 1702FP gets off automatically or lose power by itself!

i think the power cord to your monitor is not fixed tightly. check the connections. or else the power On / Off button could have got damaged. replace it with the new one. if still the problem exists, servicing of the monitor will be the solution to it.
please rate my solution.
have a nice day.

Check the VGA cord that connects from the PC to the LCD, try putting VGA cord properly to the LCD and PC, or change the VGA cord. saving mode indicates no signal from the PC. So either the PC is not booting up or VGA cord faulty.

Dell LCD - Power problem

To my knowledge, there is no easy fix. If the LCD is not powering on and your AC adapter indicates there is power, then it is in the circuitry of the LCD assy and your best bet is a TV repairman.

Odds are, that you can buy a replacement cheaper that the cost to repair that one (1800FP is an 18" LCD by the way) You can buy a 19" Wide aspect Dell LCD at Walmart for $199

Check some of the other posts as it is probably just a bad capacitor or two and very easy to fix if you can do that sort of thing. I did and mine is back up and running.
