I am also getting an error code 5100 now. That may have something to do with the problem since it is a carriage issue according to the internet

First ensure that this is not a driver issue. Please download update drivers from Canon clicking here and following instructions here :How to download driver for a Canon printer.

Test also using a different USB cable.

If that does not fix the problem, then the symptoms are those of a faulty controller board on the printer.

Try installing drivers first. If that does not work, then there may be a major fault, in that case contact Canon at the number listed on the manual or on Canon website if you want to arrange repair.

If this is an ink carriage position issue, the what you refer as italic characters are instead badly printer characters because the position of the ink carriage is not detected properly.

The ink carriage position is sensed using the encoder strip, that is that plastic strip running behind the ink carriage, near to the traction belt.

If the strip is dirty, it can be cleaned using isopropyl alcohol and cotton. If that does not fix the issue, then the strip may need replacement, or there is a faulty control board. Error 5100 can also be caused by other traction problems, but the encoder strip is the most frequent reason for this error.

My mp mP830 prints some lines (or partial lines) Consistantly misses the same rows each page

Sounds like the ink is running out at the same time each printing. Check the ink supply. The printer may not be letting you know the correct amount remaining. It could also be the ink jets themselves getting clogged and not distributing the ink enough to compensate for the amount of printing ink, on the page, in time to print all of it in succession. Do a test of no printing except where it seems to be missing and just print that area (print: selection).

New ink cartridges installed and sometimes prints with missing horizontal areas(blank lines about 1/8 inch thick 20 plus randome down the page. The next time printing may be fine. Color is washed out...

Replace the print heads for the coloured inks you replaced, run the align printer head diagnotic from the printer menu. This should correct the print problem.

Printer prints every second line or prints 4 lines then skips a line or only prints half a line.....the top part of the line is missing.

Hello sir; I believe it's time to clean print head and ink cell, power on the machine open the cover ( as you replace cartridge) , when carriage move to the center , then UNPLUG the power cord. then you may move carriage freely by hand all the way to left, noe you can clean up ink cell easily.
