ok the only thing i could say is to turn off the phone and remove the battery for about half a minute this would fix the problem hopefully. or try calling your service provider. I have telus and when that happened to me with the same phone i called them and they reset my network. they might have a problem doing this, so the easiest way to get your network reset for your phone is to tell them that you forgot your voicemail pin. when they reset your voicemail password they reset your network at the same time. hopefully this is answer your questions and get your sons cell working again.

go to your msg settings option check the service number, set the validity period as maximum,message type as text,reply path in off mode and most important is set your character support as gsm alphabet

Mine also did this. It only does this when you do not have signal. If you do have signal and it still does this you just need to call ATT and confirm it with them. They ended up sending me a new one that has better software on it for free.
