Question about Ricoh Aficio CL3500N Laser Printer

2 Answers

Our office as a Richo Aficio CL3500N. Whenever we try to print something, the printer display message comes up "Load Paper or Form Feed" and we have to press the form feed button to let the job go through. This only started yesterday and we can't seem to figure out the problem. We've tried changing the bypass tray to a different size (as suggested by others on the forum) but that doesn't seem to work. Our tray size is 8.5x11 and our bypass tray is 8.5x14

We have had this printer for years and as far as we can tell, no one changed the settings the day before yesterday to make this problem occur.

  • indexads Feb 05, 2010

It is not an issue of the paper in the trays not matching the settings, as there are four computers networked and it affects them all. The "fingers" on the paper tray are all level and appear to be as you described, and the sensors in the machine appear to be ok as well.

    The Paper Input Settings say:

    Tray Piority: Bypass Tray
Bypass Tray: 8 1/2X14 Plain Paper Tray Locked
Tray 1: 8 1/2X11 Plain Paper Tray Locked

I haven't had a chance yet to do that. Do the settings get changed on each of the computers or on the printer? If it is on the printer, how is that done?

This happens because the print job coming from your PC does not match what the printer thinks it has. So the question is what tray are you trying to print to? If you are printing to the paper tray that sits under the printer and it asks you to load paper then either the tray is set to the wrong size OR wrong paper type. An example would be if the tray was set to 8 1/2 X11 letterhead and your print job in the PC says 8 1/2 X11 plain paper. The same applies if you are trying to print to the bypass tray. The settings need to match.
If you are sure these settings match then there could be a problem with the paper size detectors in the paper tray or switches. Remove the paper tray and look at the back left corner. You should see 3 little plastic fingers. They should all be level with each other and sticking out from the tray body (for 81/2X11). If you remove the paper and slide the back stop in the tray forwards and backwards you can see the little tabs move in and out. The machine uses these tabs to determine what paper size is loaded into the tray. If you look into the "port" where the tray goes you can see the 3 "switches" (little tabs) that stick out and are actuated by the 3 tabs on the cassette. There could be an issue with the cassette tabs or the switches causing the machine to think it has something other than 8 1/2 X 11 loaded.
Check these areas and hopefully you can resolve this issue.

Don't bet that it is not a paper tray setting or problem. It is even MORE likely since it is affecting all the PC's on the network the same.

Try printing the config page on the printer. Press Menu, then use arrow key to scroll down to List/TestPrint then press enter, should say config page, then press enter. When you get the config page printed look at the Paper input box on the upper left side of the page. This will tell you what the printer thinks is loaded. Default is:

    Tray Piority: Tray1

Bypass Tray: 8 1/2X11 Plain Paper Tray Locked Duplex unavailable

    Tray 1: 8 1/2X11 Plain Paper

Let's check these settings to see if the printer settings are correct.

Great...now we are getting somewhere! Do you REALLY want the bypass tray set up as your priority tray? That means that it is your preference to ALWAYS print to the bypass tray first. This may be why the machine is asking for you to load paper. If you have legal loaded into the bypass tray and try to print a letter document then it is going to ask you to load letter paper because your priority tray is the bypass. MOST people are going to have it set as I showed you above. With the priority tray set to letter tray 1 as most printing is done on letter paper. If you primarily run legal paper then I would suggest loading the tray1 with legal and put the letter in the bypass. Make no mistake, with your current setting of the bypass tray being the priority tray, anytime you try to print a letter size document the machine is going to ask you to load paper or to do form feed.

Any updates? Did you have a chance to try changing you priority tray setting?

Don't need to mess with the computers....just the printer. You can change this setting by pressing MENU,then the down arrow to paper input, then ENTER, then down arrow to Tray priority, then ENTER, then just up down arrow to select Tray1 as priority then press ENTER. While your in there you may want to turn off the tray locking for tray 1 as well. It shows up after Paper Input. So follow the same procedure as above just stop when you see tray locking. Having this locked may prevent you from using the duplex function if you need that.

This should eliminate your issue. If so please update my helpfulness rating.

    Thanks

Hi,

You have to change the setting of your printer if it is set to print from bypass tray. You can load paper into the bypass tray and it will fix the problem. If you have a Multi Function Product (MFP) commercial grade with multiple paper sources, this message may come up again. In the file/documents properties go to the File menu of that document and change the "paper set up/page settings/paper source" from bypass to Automatic or Auto Paper. Again save the file/document and it will save your new paper source settings. If someone sends you a file, or you upgraded to a bigger machine, this message may come up and you will have to make these changes due to the fact that the document was created with smaller product printer/page settings. Don’t make bypass tray as your default setting.

Let us know if you were looking for something more else please accept the suggestion.

There may be an obstruction inside the printer. Try this....remove the paper from the paper tray and put paper in the handfeed tray (front of the machine) If it feeds from that tray it means that the feed rollers in the bottom cassette are worn.

My printer Ricoh aficio cl3500n does not print and all the lights on. Why?

The first step is to turn the machine off and then turn it back on. Do all the lights come right back on, or is it okay until you try to print to it?

If all the lights are on, there should be an error message appearing on the display. It might say out of paper, or out of toner, or a cover open, or it might show a code (such as "sc 501").

What is the code or error message that appears?

Trying to print but it ask me to load paper or form feed. also got a bypass tray message.

Sound like the computer printer preferences "paper source" is set to bypass if set to "auto select" select the tray you want. Also make sure type of paper matches what is in printer.

Jam...

1. Turn the printer off and open the access cover.
2. Look for any obstructions in the paper path and remove them if necessary. (It is possible to move the carrier assembly with the power off.)
3. Turn the printer on, load some paper, and press the Form Feed button.
4. Watch the paper as it feeds through and try to determine where the jam is occurring.
5. Check to see if all the rollers are turning.

If all the rollers are turning, there may be something in the feed path that you can't see. Go to step 6.
If not, there is probably a feed motor or a gear problem and the printer may require service.
6. If the paper is jamming under the carrier assembly, you may be able to fix it using the manual feed slot.
7. Turn the printer off.
8. Take a #10 envelope and feed it through the left side of the manual feed slot until it comes right through the printer to the back of the exit rollers.
9. Move it up and down first, and then slowly move it over to the right side. If something is stuck under the black guide plate, this may work it loose.

Error code 92

It sounds like the print job you are sending is probably on A4 and the machine is set to A4 or has A4 in the tray.

Try changing the page size that you send to the printer and ensure the paper size in the tray is the same as the print job AND that the tray sizes are set correctly.
