Either the new ink is a generic cartridge and not reset properly, or one of the other inks is empty. Your display should tell you which ink is empty. U163 just says that one of the inks is empty.

Let me clarify. The printer indicated I needed new black ink so I replaced it with a new cartridge. That is when the message never would clear. I use the printer every week at least five to six times...

It's possible that you have a defective black cart. It's also possible that the connection between the cart and the printer isn't working. Remove the cart, wipe the connectors on the cart with a clean cloth, and GENTLY use a pencil eraser on the connections in the printer.

Press and hold the Stop/Reset button until the message disappears. You will have to do this every time you insert a "new" refilled cartridge.

My Canon printer MX860 will get half low on ink and freeze up with error U163 telling you to replace the ink cartridge. Is there a way to override this error so you can use the remaing ink?

This just happened with my MX860. I pushed the "Stop" button on the far right of the control panel and held until it beeped. Appears to do some kind of a reset. After that, the U163 error was cleared and it printed again. Don't know how long it will go before that happens again but it is working for now. Hope this helps.

Error u163

error u163 tells you it thinks its out of ink .. open the lid .. the problem cart will blink every 3 seconds if the cart is low and every second if its empty .. you can reset the error by holding down the "stop/reset" button for about 10 seconds .. but its not good to run the printer if a cart is empty.

Check ink u163 col-on lcd screen. the printer is not respond toany mode

Hi there,
The Error CHECK INK U163
Action : Ink has run out/
Replace the ink cartridge and close the Scanning Unit (Printer Cover).

If printing is in progress and you want to continue printing , press the Stop/Reset button for atleast 5 seconds with the ink cartridge installed. Then printing can be continue under the ink out condition.

The function for detecting the remaining ink level will be disabled.

Replace the empty ink cartridge immediately after the printing. The resulting print quality is not satisfactory, if printing is continued under the ink out condition.

Hope this helps.
Thanks.
Have a good day.

Printer won't recognize ink cartridge

you can try by cleaning the copper contacts on the cart .. and if it works fine with the old cart i.e if it doesnt gives any error with the old ones then possibly the problem might be with the new cart..

I have used all of the larger black ink...how do I switch it to the smaller one?

The large black ink cart is for text, the small black ink cart is for photos. There is no way to "Switch". Replace the large cart before you clog or burn the print head. Because the carts have microchips, refilling is only for the strong minded individuals that have refilled on previous printers. Th learn on chipped printers has a steep learning curve. Give it a try if you want, though.

Did you use generic ink carts? If yes ink has stained the led control. Try to clean it by help of a towel. In some cases this will help. If not, the led control needs replacing!
Another solution:
Did you answer the question given by printer when changing the cart?

You might take all carts out, unplug machine from power outlet. replug to power. wait until machine demands carts. Place cart in and answer question.
