Hi.

The first thing to do is disconnect power immediately. If there is arching and bad burnt-plastic-like smell, means that there is a problem, and that if the oven is used in this condition, you may get further damage to the appliance, or there may be heath concern for the user.

You get arching inside microwave when inside the cavity there is a strongly conductive object, such as a metal object or carbon residue.
You also get arching when the oven cavity is damaged.
In that case the cavity may have lost insulation, and it is better having the oven repaired by a technician, that will also conduct a radiation leak test on the appliance to prove its safety.

To attempt fixing the problem, do the following:

Disconnect power cord.

Check inside the oven cavity, ensure that there is no foreign object inside (such as a small screw). Check also under the turntable.

Check that the light and the magnetron covers are well in place.

Clean the cavity thoroughly, clean also the lamp enclosure if this can be accessed. Carbon residue from food may be causing the arching.

If after cleaning the arching is still there, that means that the cavity is damaged. In that case better calling a technician.
A damaged microwave may loose insulation , and this may be very dangerous for health.

If you want to contact a technician, the best thing to do is ringing the phone number listed on the appliance owners manual.

Best regards.

Ginko.

Its arching and humming

Once a microwave starts arching it is a real problem. They are coated with a special paint and if the paint gets scratched then arching gets worse and it can burn out the whole oven. See this page: http://www.microtechfactoryservice.com/

Our GE sensor microwave oven flashes and makes loud noises when turned on and smells like something is burning. Is it worth it to have someone look at it or is it just done?

Just about anything can be repaired if you wish to invest sufficient money. The repairs for this one is likely to exceed $100, so compare this against a fresh machine. Good luck!

Burning smell and won't heat.

If it buzzes real loud it's probably the high volyage diode. However some times if it smells it's the transformer. Usually the diode is a cheap fix ~$10.00 but this model the diode is $50. It's number 50 on the link below. Let me know how it works out or you need anything else.

GE Microwave JVM1190, fan does not turn and fuse is arcing

If your motor runs freely and normally, I would not worry about the charred or burn smell as that will be there for a while. You can however to lessen that smell is to power everthing off and unplug the ac cord and use isopropyl alcohol with a cleaning brush like they use to clean circuit boards and clean the area thoroughly where the hot spot was. In that way in the future if you have a problem in that same area that persists after your initial fix then you can pin point it to the particular spot if it is a component that for instance drive the motor or is part of that circuitry. However, I do not think you will have anymore problems once you change the belt.
