Question about Aprilaire 550 Humidifier

1 Answer

Water is blown through the pad and ends up on the floor.

Pad is the appropriate one. The drain is not blocked, water hardly reaches the bottom of pad vwhere the drain is before it is blown through.. I checked and found that there is no mechanism at all to reduce the airflow from warm air duct as was suggested earlier but then, I did not have this problem for eight years and the pressure from the airflow must been always about the same .

I would try a new pad and make sure you are using the aprileaire brand only. not a aftermarket pad

Water drains into air return & onto floor

Hello, usually this is a sign of a drain problem or the water is entering the humidifier too fast. If the water is not draining at the end of the drain line something is preventing the water from flowing. I would also make sure that there is no heavy mineral buildup on the water panel pad this can cause water to leak out of the humidifier. Lastly check to make sure there is a orifice inside the supply water tubing leaving the solenoid, if not this causes the water to enter the humidifier too fast.

Hello,All the pads have a protectant(white) coating because the pad is aluminum and would rot out fairly quickly from getting wet.The slime is bacteria(fungus) not from the coating that forms from stagnant (sitting) water.Make sure the unit is draining out dry after each cycle. With the pad out pour vinegar OR bleach & water (10:1) to kill the mold in the drain pipe.Do not clean the pad at all ,it gets replaced. They sell an inexpensive wet floor alarm at the store that makes noise when wet.

Water keeps leaking out onto our carpeting.

Check the drain lines to make sure the are not plugged and check the hidifier pad to be sure it is not scaled up and not letting the water flow through the pad. Last thing is make sure the humidifier is level so the water isn't leaking out the cover instead of the drain.

Check the drain to make sure its clear and that the tray is properly aligned with the drain of the housing. Also check how much water is being fed to the unit sometimes you have too much and it is blown off the pad. Just a personal opinion I have never installed a humidifier on the front of a furnace for this reason. I hope this helps

The unit leaks water on the floor

you need to replace the pad every season. if you are using a generic pad maybe more often. it also must be level and the drain coming off bottom clear. i suggest getting pads from aprilaire.com . not the generic from hardware store. also if its got a black feed tube going from the solinoid valve to the top of the humidifier pad you may want to replace that aswell, they have been known to crack the new ones are grey.

It has been awhile since i removed my water pad and forgot how to route water line in pad

I've got a 560A, but if it's similar:  The pad sits in a plastic frame with the drain hole and "funnel" at the bottom.  At the top of the frame, there's a plastic piece that sits at the top of the pad; it snaps into the frame and the frame snaps into the humidifier housing.  The water tube from the solenoid slides into this plastic piece so that the water is directed to the top of the pad.

Water flow through humidifier

I installed this humidifier (and had a lot of trouble installing it!) and was surprised by the flow of water. Mine leaks out of the bottom of the unit so I haven't actually used it yet. I'll try to figure out why it's leaking this weekend. I thought there would be less water flowing through the pad. I suspect that the weight of the unit is causing it to not be plumb so some water is dripping off of the pad and past the drain tray.
