Question about Dell Latitude D430 Notebook

2 Answers

My D430 laptop may have caught a virus. When I power up Windows can't even open and it jumps right over to a suspicious page that tells me to try a few options to click on but none work. I can't even get past this odd page that seems to be blocking the computer from starting up. I can't get to ''My Computer''. Any ideas? Thank you.

Thank you for trying to help!

As the DELL start up tries to turn on it jumps to this page that says:

"We apologize for the inconvenience, Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardwar or software change might have caused this.
If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shutdown to protect your files or folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked.
If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally.
    Safe Mode
    Safe Mode with Networking
    Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
    Start Windows Normally"

None of these end up really working and it keeps counting down from 30 seconds until Windows XP will start but it can't.

    Thanks for any advice

There are a lot of reasons why this can happen, from a corrupt driver to a damaged registry.

It is not always easy or possible to fix. You need a boot CD to start up the PC (the install disk Recovery Console is one thing you can do),

In the recovery console, try

chkdsk c: / f

and that will fix any simple disk corruption and may allow booting

Since you have not installed recovery console, you need to get to it by booting the install CD.

If the registry is corrupted, try

The best course of action is to reinstall from a full image backup, which it is a good habit to take every week :-)

Yes, download the following and put them onto a USB pen drive:

Lavasoft Adaware
AVG antivirus Fee

Also download the latest definitions for Lavasoft Adaware and AVG as separate files (these will be available somewhere on their websites)

Start the computer and tap F8 as it boots. Select safemode no network when the menu appears during bootup.

If you get into safe mode windows, right click "my computer" and switch off system restore point.

Copy Smitfraudfix onto the desktop and run it.

reboot into normal mode.

If not fixed, go back into safemode:

Install Lavasoft Adaware, run the update file, do a full system scan then deactivate the software completely.

Do the same with AVG. If you struggle to deactivate AVG, uninstall it after the scan.

Boot back into normal mode. If these three haven't got it but you can get into safe mode, install and run Hijack This, and post the results on a hijack this forum.

If you cant get into safe mode, your OS is probably dead.

Sounds like you have a sticky up arrow key,or you have a virus on your comp.Try booting in safemode by turning on your computer and tapping the F8 key while booting, then choose safemode.Once you are in Windows, open the program you are using and try your text document again. If it works correctly, you may have a virus. While you are in Safemode, run your virus scanner, then reboot your computer to see if the problem is solved. If it does not fix it,try running System Restore back to before the problem started.Good luck :)

Where is device manager on my dell d430?

You didn't say which Operating System you are using, but if it's Vista or Windows 7 click on Start, then right click on Computer and scroll to the bottom and click on 'Properties'. When the Properties windows opens it should be the top option on the left. If you are using 'XP', right click on 'My Computer', scroll to the bottom and click on 'Properties, then on the 'Hardware' tab. It will be the first 'button' on the new Window.

How do I enable the inbuilt webcam on my DELL D430 laptop?

Hi scottie_dorn,
this isn't a webcam, it's an ambient light sensor, I'm afraid. Just to make sure: assuming that you're running a Windows-system, please open the device manager and have a look at "Audio, Video..." whether there is an entry regarding a webcam. I'm pretty sure, there isn't one... Greetings from Germany,
PS: Please don't forget to rate this solution after you've tested it out! Thanks in advance and have a nice day!

Desktop and Task bar disappearing

You computer is infected by the spyware virus try to run in the safemode and download and install spyware doctor of pctools also the registry mechanic this two utilities is very helpful in term of spyware virus. But sometime if your computer infected by the UST.AVI virus you cannot install any program even the anti virus. The virus automatically close any program you install to prevent the anti virus to install in the system. If this happen the only way to salvage the files is reinstall the windows in the other directory then after you finished install windows. You can copy now the the files in the old directory copy of the windows your needed files. and delete the old windows directory permanently.

First thing to do is to download and run a decent anti-virus and anti-spyware program. The best free ones at the moment are AVGfree and AVGAS which are available for download from; Download the 2 programs, install them, update them, and then run a full system scan - first with the anti-virus then with the anti-spyware program. Hopefully they will find and deal with your trojan. Please ask again if you need more info, the AVG programs are very clear and simple to use :)
