Question about Kenmore Dryers

2 Answers

I have a Kenmore 500 series dryer in my house. It is 3-4 years old. It is making that high-pitched hum that it makes when the lint filter needs to be cleaned. However, I have cleaned the lint filter and detached the lint hose to make sure it is clear. What else could it be? Thanks in advance for your helpt.

    Dear Sir:

I am not dealing with a scrapping noise. Also, I have had a local repair examine the machine and even take the back off for a look and he found nothing visually wrong.

The noise I am hearing is the same noise made when the lint screen is full. However, all lint has been cleaned up.

    Any other ideas please?

    Steve

Something may be in the blower wheel assembly causing the high pitch. You have no rear bearing on this model except the drum rollers and these will not make the same sound as you are describing. A small bit of just about any thing just close enough to the blower wheel when rotating can cause this because it can redirect air and cause like a whistle or humm. Hope this helps. Rick

I forgot also, that over a period of time using fabric softener sheets can block the proper airflow of air thru the filter even tho it looks clean and clear. A test for this is to hold the filter flat under a faucet and let cold water run onto it slowly. The water should flow right thru, if is doesn't flow and kind of puddles you will need to replace your filter. I know this is tough but believe me this is a tough one. Just remembered a problem similar to this and that was the cause. Hop this helps.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa.
A common problem with noises from dryers has been the under wire that may come out of a bra. In dryers, they can get caught in one of the drum seals and make a scrapping noise, (remove power, grab a flash light and have a peek inside through the door opening) or the wire can actually pass through one of the heating duct holes at the back of the drum and touch something electrical like the heating element, thermostats. Please do accept the solution if the issue is resolved or else revert for further assistance.

Thanks
Rylee

110.64872400 kenmore dryer 80 series. dryer makes humming noise when start button is pushed, can turn drum manually. please help

The humming noise is most likely coming from the timer motor and not from the drive motor. This characterizes a problem with a blown thermal fuse which is wired in series with the drive motor and located on the blower housing. Power to the motor is cut when the thermal fuse blows open and consequently the drive motor cannot run. No dryer function works when the drive motor cannot run.

Unplug the dryer or disconnect power then pry the lower access panel off with a flat-head screwdriver as shown.

Remove the screw from the lint duct bracket and remove the bracket. Remove the two hex-head screws from the lint duct and remove the duct to access the thermal fuse and the cycling thermostat.

Click on the links below for the detailed troubleshooting of this problem and the parts diagram. The cycling thermostat(part number

Kenmore elec dryer series 80 not heating up

The problem is in the thermal cut-off (cut-out) and the high-limit thermostat located on the heating element housing. Verify this condition by bypassing the said components. Disconnect power then access the thermal cut-off (cut-out) and the high-limit thermostat. Disconnect the wires of each component then connect them together and insulate it properly. Reconnect the power then start the dryer. The problem is indeed in the thermal cut-off (cut-out) and the high-limit thermostat if the dryer heats up. Replace both parts and it should solve the problem. It is an easy and cheap repair to make. Indicate the exact model number of the dryer should you need further assistance.

Dryer still heats up, but it sounds like the motor is making a high pitch whining noise?

something might be hitting the blower wheel or the wheel could be cracked, remove the bottom panel, take out the lint filter and remove the duct that the filter slides into, start the dryer and check the blower wheel to see if it's that or the motor, clean out the duct and vac out the inside of dryer while you're in there, blow out the vent line,do this once a year and you'll have less problems with dryer and no fires

Kenmore 500 series dryer won't start. Only 2.5 years old.

turn the drum with your hand,if it feels hard to move you could have something stuck in the blower wheel that is below the lint filter and behind the duct that the filter slides into or the belt could be jammed,if it moves try starting it it might start you could have a flat spot on the motor and most likely you'll need to replace it,if it'shumming it's the motor making the sound

High pitched noise

HI Step 1: Remove the back access panel. Then reach behind the drum, motor pulley, and idler arm pulley. If these areas are clogged with dirt and lint, undue strain on the motor may be causing the humming noise. Worn or broken belts can also cause a humming noise. Check the belts for wear and damage. If the belts look all right, you may be able to stop the noise by spraying them with fan belt dressing, available at automotive and hardware stores and home centers.

Step 2: Turn the dryer on. The noise you hear may be the whirl of the spinning drum, not the motor. Some noise is normal.

Step 3: Force a little 20-weight nondetergent motor oil (not all-purpose oil) around the ends of the motor shaft. This lubrication may stop the humming noise. If this doesn't solve the problem, remove the motor and take it to a professional service person.

The centrifugal switch on the dryer motor may be located on top of the motor. Humming, no motor power, and no heat can be caused by a faulty centrifugal switch. If the switch is externally mounted, check the terminals of the switch to make sure they are tight and not burned. If you spot trouble, remove the switch and take it to a professional service person for testing. A faulty switch will probably have to be replaced. Some centrifugal switches are located inside the motor housing; you won't be able to remove the switch in this case. Remove the entire motor and take it to a professional for repairs.

Kenmore dryer help?

Sounds like motor is stalled. Remove the lint filter, look inside down toward the bottom left corner at the blower wheel. Something may be jammed in the blower wheel. If difficult to see, TURN OFF POWER TO MACHINE, remove bottom access panel. 2 to 3 screws on bottom of panel. Remove lint housing (3 to 4 screws) and inspect blower wheel for debris.

Kenmore gas dryer. 70 series

sound slike something fell down there and is jamming the blower from turning. if the filter is ontop of the unit, remove the 2 phillips located under where the filter pulls out from. and the n remove all the screws on back panel youll see ( down the left side of unit ) the filter houosing, its secured by 3 5/16 screws toward the bottom portion of the housing, simply unscrerw and wiggle out, then remove the debris, and reassemble.
if the lint screen is located inside behind door, eitehr remove the bottom accesss panel or pop the top(with a screw driver approx 3 inches in from ither side of main top relaes the clips) the lid tips back revealing 2 screws holding front panel to the unit, after removing you will see the filter housing, still mounted by probalby 3-4 screws, remove the housing and retrieve the debris that has fallen down there
