Go to your CD-R icon under my computer and right click and select properties. This should give you disk information if you are using Windows operating system.

If it shows you that the disk is full its either the disk is really fully or it was finalised to avoid further writng on disk

If it show that the disk has nothing on it it means the disk is either a blank CD or its information was corrupted and youcant burn anything on it nor read as well

If the disk shows free space then you can burn on it.

Remove Write protection from DVD disc

1. Insert the DVD disc into the computer's DVD-ROM burner drive. Click on "Burn files to disc" from the window that automatically pops up.

2. Type a name for the DVD disc in the "Burn a Disc" box. Click "Show formatting options" and choose a formatting option.

3. Choose "Live File System" to allow files to be copied immediately to the DVD disc, much like sending data to a USB flash drive or floppy disk. Live File System discs can only be read by Windows XP or later versions. Choose "Mastered" to have files be copied to the DVD all at once. This is the standard burning method; discs can be played back on any DVD-ROM drive.

4. Click "Next" to prepare the disc. Files can now be copied to the disc using the selected method.

Im getting a message that says "this disc requires on-the fly copying" What does that mean?

which burning software are you using
When using the on-the-fly method, insert the original disc into a drive and a recordable disc into the drive. The original disc in the drive is copied immediately without any time delay to the blank disc in the recorder. The on-the-fly method allows you to copy discs very quickly, and does not require any additional space on the disc.
In order to be able to use the on-the-fly method, you will need at least two drives: one for reading the disc and a disc burner for writing. The following requirements apply to the read drive and disc burner:

· The disc burner must feature buffer underrun protection, or the drive must be capable of delivering the data sufficiently quickly. The read speed should be at least twice as fast as the write speed.

· The read drive must be capable of delivering information on the number and type of sessions, otherwise Nero Burning ROM may not be able to produce an exact copy.

If you want to copy Audio CDs, we recommend the copy image method because the quality of the read audio files can suffer depending on the drive.

Hope this helps

If a problem on 2 x pc's then its probably a drive issue.

Does it play CD/DVD's ?. If not you could try a CD lens cleaning disk, it may just need a good clean out.

As you're moving it between PC's then the IDE cable is probably connected properly.

My only other thought is that it is faulty, probably not worth repairing, you can get dual layer DVD/CD rw drives for under £15 on ebay.

Computer does not recognize it as a CD RW drive

When you try to write data to an optical disc, you may experience any of the following symptoms:

* You receive various disc write error messages.
* You experience issues with the drive and the built-in recording feature of Windows XP.
* You experience issues with third-party programs that you use to write data to the disc.
* You cannot read the disc in all versions of Windows.
* You cannot read the disc, or some files on the disk, by using an MP3 player.
* When you add files or folders to a disc that already contains data, some files are lost.
* Recording files to the disc is inconsistent.
* The disc recording operation is consistently unsuccessful.

TROUBLESHOOTING

Troubleshooting specific errors
If you experience one of the following errors, follow the appropriate steps to resolve the error.

* There is no disc in the drive. Please insert a writable CD into drive.
This error can occur if the CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recordable device. This error can also occur if the device driver has been corrupted. To resolve this issue, see Method 3 in the "General troubleshooting" section and Method 1 in the "Advanced troubleshooting" section.

* Drive not accessible, incorrect function
This error message typically occurs when you try to write to a CD-R or a CD-RW, and the Windows XP built-in disc recording feature does not recognize the CD drive as a recordable drive. This error message may also occur if specific third-party programs are installed. For more information about how to troubleshoot this error,

when you access the CD-ROM drive, the DVD-ROM drive, or the CD-RW drive
* Error Deleting File or Folder.
Cannot delete file name. Files on this CD-ROM drive are read-only. You cannot copy or move files over to this CD-ROM drive.

This error message can occur because individual files cannot be deleted from the CD-RW. You cannot use the CD disc recording feature of Windows XP for random-access storage while you are writing to disc.

To set the service to Automatic, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc /s, and then click OK.
2. Double-click IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service.
3. Under Service Status, click Start.
4. Try to write data to a CD.

How do i copy a disk

Before you Begin Make sure there is no program runing that has opened any file on the original disk. You cannot run the Disk Copy procedure if any file on the original or destination disks is in use by any program. For example, if you were editing a document in MS Word, saving to the disk in Drive A, and now want to copy it to another disk: FIRST quit the MS Word program, then execute the Disk Copy procedure. Caveat LectorThis Disk Copy procedure will make an exact copy of the original disk on the copy disk. It will completely overwrite the copy disk, replacing anything on it with the contents of the original (source) disk. That means that if there are any files on the copy (destination) disk before you begin, those files will be destroyed. You might want to take a look at the destination disk before beginning to be sure there's nothing on it you want to save. -------- Copying a Disk
  1. Double-Click on the My Computer icon on the Desktop. The My Computer window will open.
  2. In the My Computer Window, click once (not the usual double-click!) to select the icon for 31/2 Floppy A:
  3. Click on the File menu and select Copy Disk. The Copy Disk window will open onscreen.
  4. In the Copy Disk window you will see the option:Copy from 3 1/2 Floppy (A:) to 3 1/2 Floppy (A:)Click on the Start button.
  5. A new window will open prompting you to Insert the disk you want to copy from (source disk). Insert the disk and then click on the OK button. The program will begin "reading" the files from this original (source) disk. You can watch the progress in the little "progress bar" in the Copy Disk window.
  6. Once the original disk has been read into memory you'll be prompted toInsert the disk you want to copy to (destination disk)Now remove the original (source) disk from the drive and insert the copy (destination) disk into the drive. The click the OKbutton. You can watch the progress as the computer "writes" to the copy (destination) disk in the Progress bar in the Copy Disk window.
  7. When the copy is completed you'll see a new, small window popup that will report:The copy completed successfullyNow remove that copy (destination) disk. You are finished!
------- This will help. Thanks please keep updated.please do rate the solution positively .thank you for using fixya.
