OK, I think I have sorted out how to do a DIY repair. I have taken several step-by-step images and once I have sorted them out and written it up I'll post the solution for you. It might just be a lose connection or you might need to replace the LCD. You can buy replacements quite cheaply on e-bay. Either way, you should be able to sort it out for yourself once I publish the images.

I've uploaded a step by step guide to either checking for a loose
connection or replacing the LCD to my web site here

Feel free to ask any questions should you have them.

My Nikon Coolpix P5100 all of a sudden started taking pictures with horrible horizontal lines all over the picture. Previewing and video recording is fine though. Is this is hardware failure? This model is...

Strange that the Video recordings are not affected! If the lines are in exactly the same position on all images then it is probably a sensor problem. If they are in random positions it could be a bad internal connection. In any case, you should take it to a Nikon service centre for an expert opinion and estimate - if you plan to repair it.

Dropped the camera in a toilet - takes pix with "lines" - can we do anything

If you tried to turn it on while any water was still in it, you probably already fried the circuits.

Lens error on nikon p5100

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

My P5100 will not turn on - no green light & lens is stuck in ''out'' position

If nothing happens with a fresh battery set, then nothing can be done. Some thing has to happen in order to be able to tell what is going on.
If there indeed nothing happening when a fresh battery set is in and the on button is pressed, that means the camera needs service or some serious repair. This could be something very simple inside such as a disconnected or loose cable. On the other hand, this can also mean that this camera is good for selling on a site such as Ebay as parts or a fixer.
There is a Nikon P5100. If it is a Nikon, then you may consider this link to call the Nikon co. and ask for either repair or a trade-off or trade up to a similar camera or better. Nikon does have a trade-in or trade-up program.

Lens error on Nikon Coolpix p5100

The problem is that the lens has become stuck in the barrel. There are some DIY solutions you could try, but the probability is that you will have to get it fixed by a professional.

Use these at own risk as it may further damage the camera.

Firstly , try connecting your ac adapter or usb cable.

Try holding the shutter button while switching on the camera.

Look at the lens , and if some of the lens 'circles' is misaligned or not concentric then try wiggling it (while holding camera lens down).

Try gently pushing or pulling the lens when it extends but this is risky as it may cause the lens barrel to slip out of its guidance system.

Another way to do this is to place the camera lens down on a hard surface and then power it up. Be sure to use a soft cloth or something similar as to not scratch your lens or casing. Let the lens push the camera up and down a few times and sometimes the little resistance provided by the camera is enough to get things going again.

Try hitting your camera near the lens on the body with the soft tissue on the palm of your hand.

Other than that , I would take the camera to a repair center for a evaluation to see if it would cost more to repair than to replace the camera.

If it is still under warranty I would suggest you take it in before trying any of these steps and remove any off-brand batteries or accessories as some stores are really fussy about warranty repairs on camera's with non-brand accessories.

Hope the advise is useful. please do not hesitate to let me know if you need any further assistance.

The LCD of my Nikon P5100 can not display

You probably have a lose connection on your LCD. Mine was the same. I initially sent it off for repair and it worked fine for about 6 months or so but then started playing up again. Today I took it apart myself to recheck all the connections. I took a series of set-by-step images and once I have sorted them out and written up the instructions I will post it so you can have a go at fixing yours.

Nikon Coolpix P5100 settings

Olympus cameras have an "all reset" function that can be toggled on or off in the menu. If "on", all settings are restored to default on boot up, if "off" then the last setting are kept on boot up. If the settings are supposed to be kept be design, but are not, then the capacitor or small battery on the main board needs to be replaced. Not user replaceable, usually soldered on or socketed but no simple access.
