Question about Dell Dimension 3100 PC Desktop

1 Answer

I have an old (5 years) DELL PC with a CRT monitor. Of late the display has on the screen appears to be vibrating a little. This is causing eyestrain. The brightness, clarity & colours of the display are perfectly OK, which I think means that the monitor still has some useful life. Please advise.

The monitor is probably faulty. To determine if the monitor or the video card is faulty, connect a different monitor to your DELL. If the image is OK on the other monitor then the other CRT monitor is faulty. Repairs to the CRT monitor may not be a cost effective solution, I suggest you buy a LCD monitor.

What do I try to get 17" dell 1908pf monitor to stay on? Just goes to black screen after a couple seconds.

If it is a 1908pf, it is classed as a 19 inch monitor, not a 17 inch. Notwithstanding, the device is approximately 8 model years old, which makes it a senior citizen for computer monitors. Most likely candidate is the ballast (inverter) for the backlight system going bad, or the florescent backlight bulb itself is failing. These CAN be repaired, but as old as this unit is, you are better served buying a new one. Modern TVs/monitors can only be expected to last a little over five years anymore. The backlighting circuits are their weak points. Manufacturers are not interested in improving this, since they want you to buy a new unit every 4-5 years, rather than every 10 years as was the case in the CRT days. "Planned obsolescence", as we like to call it, is not unique to TVs either. Newer appliances (fridges/ranges/dishwashers) are all being made "better", meaning all kinds of bells and whistles, but engineered to last half as long as their predecessors. Apparently we can't have it both ways.

you have defective RGB circuit, or re solder all CRT Board maybe you have lost contact at the RGB CRT Board. RGB means red, green, blue. CRT means Cathode Ray Tube.

I have a Dell 2007WFPb 20

If your LCD monitor displays your desktop fine as it boots up and then goes blank after a few seconds, but you can still faintly see your desktop then this may seem like a brightness issue but it's not. The picture displays very faintly, this is because the LCD backlighting isn't working properly. Which in turn is either because (most likely in cases like this) the inverter circuit has failed or the cold cathode tube has blown. If you're new to the electronics business and are not sure how to solder and connect circuits then this is the job for a qualified repair technician. So i suggest you head on down to your local PC store and have a technician take a look.

If you want to try it youself go here to order some spares.
If the monitor switches off and you can't see your desktop faintly then this may just be a power saving issue. Yo fix this check out my other tip here.

If your monitor is less than a year old then I suggest you take it back to where you bought it and have them send it in for repairs or swop it out with a new one. LCD monitors usually have at least a 1 year warranty sometimes it can even be up to 3 years if you register yours when you purchase it or if it's a really expensive screen.

If the monitor is a good 4-5 years old then it may not be worth fixing or may be too expensive. I suggest you invest in a newer widescreen option. LCD monitors have drastically come down in price over the years and you can easily get a wopping 23" for as little as $180.

I am experiencing a high pitched buzzing noise coming from the dell monitor #cn-0p0151-64180-3a5-3642

CRT monitors and TVs do this after some time. It is caused by high frequency alternating fields - think transformer - when things get old and loosen up enough to vibrate.

The good news is that it is time to upgrade to a modern flat screen monitor, and this will be cheaper than repairs on your old tube.

Check signal message when data cable unplugged. blank screen when data cable plugged

This problem is most likely to be caused by a bent or broken pin on the CRT video cable at the VGA connector, OR, this could also be caused by a damaged VGA connector on the back of the laptop. If neither VGA connector is at fault, the problem could be caused a damaged (kinked) CRT data cable, or internal damage to the VGA connector on the back of the laptop, though I suspect the problem is more likely to be external, and you probably won't have to disassemble the laptop to locate the culprit...
