You will have to pull the hard drive out of your emachines and then go to any major retailer (like a Best Buy) and get an "external USB enclosure" for around $30.00. You will then add your emachines hard drive to this enclosure and plug it into another working computer. Make sure it is made for the type of hard drive you have. Click on the link below to view it:

Is the "dead" hard drive 80GB? or 500GB?
I presume you set up this hard drive as the second hard drive, or as an external drive. You can do these:
1. Disk Management (check the readablility):
Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Computer Management (please run as administrator; right click it), Disk Management. Is this hard drive info exist in this screen? If it is, then the hard drive is not dead.
Click on the hard drive info, right click, and you can do some actions (format, expand the volume, assign a drive letter, etc.)
2. If necessary, test and fix it using Norton Utilities (download and run it):

That sounds like you have a dead hard disk drive if the hard disk drive is dead then you will need to have it replaced there is a way to check if it is dead or not, you will need to go into the bios for most it's usually the hi lighted tab when the bios comes if its dead the hard drive slot should say empty or none if it's not dead it will show the hard drive info

try the drive on another computer to see if the recent repairs have worked or take back to repairers and ask how to access drive or could they show you it working as they repaired it and it doesnt work for you

if dell is replacing your drive and motherboard you will have to extract your info first
May be the motherboard Dell is to replace is the reason your unit is not working?,
take the drive to another computer for extracting, asap.
if you cant extract info then there is nothing you can do without a huge expense, hard drive recovery is expensive and only the serious go this way,

I have a hard drive 500g wd once i give it power it wont turn on make a noise then shuts off. did i lose all my info??

If it's an "internal" drive, it's almost dead.
Ship your drive to a professional (and expensive!) "Data Recovery Service". They can repair your drive, just long enough to copy all your files to a brand-new disk-drive.

If it's an "external' drive, then:
* the data-cable is faulty,
* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the unit is faulty,
* the "internal" disk-drive inside the unit is faulty.

You could try opening-up the unit, extracting the disk-drive, and connecting it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to bypass the possibly-faulty USB-cable and/or USB-adapter.

Hard disk not working

This means that the external enclosure is broken BUT NOT THE HARD DRIVE. If you have a warrenty with this unit, they will replace it but not extract your data from it without a fee.

If you need your data out and hopefully you have no warrenty on this unit, you crack open the housing, gently extract the harddrive and buy another enclosure for it and it should work from there. If it does not get detected by your pc, its 2 things: either the usb port on your pc is not working any more or you have had a bad harddrive and needs replacing anyway.

The data on this unit in a dead or defective hard drive still can be extracted, however, you can either send it to a data recovery service or learn how to open the hard drive and extract the disk from it by hand to get your data out on your own: Your choice. Good luck

You can put the defective HDD in a computer thats running correctly and use the existing OS to gain access to it. That way you can extract all the info from it. Do not remove the main HDD, simply shut down the PC, open it, add the Hard Disk Drive to the MOBO and restart. you may get an option to decide which HDD you want to boot from, make sure you boot from the good one.
Make a file and extract all info.
If the new computer does not recognize the drive, there are steps you can take to find it.
I've done this hundreds of times and have had around 87% success.
Unfortunately, some HDD's are destroyed and no data can be extracted.

Good Luck

No recognize

The drive will need to be extracted. The enclosure and/or drive has failed and is causing your computer to fail. Remove the drive carefully from the enclosure and test it in a good, known working stable enclosure...
