    How to Know Wire Colors
  1. Step 1 In most home-wiring applications, the circuit features one black wire, one white wire and a green or non-insulated ground wire. On this type of circuit the black wire is delivering the voltage and the white is acting as the neutral. The circuit has to have each in order to be complete. In some cases a white wire may be used as a hot feed. When this occurs it is commonplace for the white wire to have a strip of black electrical tape around the insulation to signify that it is being used as a hot wire.
  2. Step 2 You may notice a red wire from time to time. The red wire has a couple of responsibilities: It can be a second circuit, sharing the neutral with the circuit fed by the black wire or it can be a traveler, as used in a three-way switch configuration. Additional conductors like the one found in 4-wire electrical wire may be colored blue.
  3. Step 3 While some 240-volt circuits use different colored wires including orange, yellow, brown and gray, they are not typically found in the residential home, so we will go into those applications in another article.

I have a general lee cb with a 4-pin standard mic. the wires in my mic cord broke at the plug. does wnyone know how to wire this type of mic back and what color wires go to the correct pin?there are 6...

Here are the Pin outs for different mics that will work with your radio. If a wire is not listed then you cut it off. It's best to keep the wires as short as possible no longer than a half inch is suggested. Normally the Cobra pin out is standard for most radios.

Stock - 1- Shield (Ground) 2- Yellow (Audio) 3- Red (Transmit) 4- White (Receive)

Astatic - (4 wire) 1- Shield 2- White 3- Red 4- Black

Astatic - (6 wire) 1- Shield & Blue 2- White 3- Red 4- Black Yellow NC

Daiwa EM-500, Cobra, CA Series - 1- Shield & Black 2- Red 3- White 4- Blue

Galaxy DC-521S - (4 wire) 1- Shield 2- Yellow 3- Red 4- Black

Galaxy CB-660EI - 1- Shield & Black 2- White 3- Red 4- Blue

Sadelta - 1- Shield 2- White 3- Brown 4- Green

I need the wiring for the mic

Hello,
Here is the wire diagram for several common mics in relation to a 4 pin CB. Most recent 4 pin CB's such as Midland, Cobra, Connex, Uniden, etc can use 4 pin mics. The wiring is actually depending on the mic rather than the CB so long as the CB's are 4 pin as well. Once you go back to late 80's the 4 pin design was a little different. Anything new it is simpler.
Stock Mic 1- Shield (Ground) 2- Yellow (Audio) 3- Red (Transmit) 4- White (Receive)
Astatic - 4 wire 1- Shield 2- White 3- Red 4- Black
static - 6 wire 1- Shield & Blue 2- White 3- Red 4- Black Yellow NC

Daiwa EM-500 Cobra CA Series 1- Shield & Black 2- Red 3- White 4- Blue
Galaxy DC-521S - 4 wire 1- Shield 2- Yellow 3- Red 4- Black
Galaxy CB-660EI 1- Shield & Black 2- White 3- Red 4- Blue
Sadelta 1- Shield 2- White 3- Brown 4- Green
Turner RK56 Road King 1- Shield & Red 2- White 3- Blue 4- Black Yellow NC

I have an outside light that I want this timer to control. The switch box has a black and a white going out to the light and a black and white with the electricity. The instructions show to hook the red...

You posted under ST01C timer which has 3 wires: black blue and red (no white wire)
Your description seems to say your timer has 3 wires: black white and red

These are two different timers
I'm going to give you two different instructions that are dead-accurate for both types of timers above:

1) Instructions for ST01C and EJ500 Intermatic timers with black blue and red
Lets do the black and white with electricity:
The black Hot wire connects to Timer-black-wire
The white Neutral wire connects to white wire going to Load (to lights)

Now the black and white to the Load (lights)
The black to Load (to light) connects to Timer-blue-wire
The white wires are connected together with wire nut

The red wire is capped off, and used only if you have 3-way switching.
Green connects to bare ground

2) Instructions for all in-wall timers with black, red and white wires (except Aube series timers)
Lets do the black and white from electricity
The black Hot wire connects to Timer-black-wire
The white Neutral connects to Timer-white-wire and to white wire going to Load

Now the black and white to the Load
The black wire to Load connects to Timer-red-wire
all three white wires are connected and covered with wire nut
Green connects to bare ground

DO NOT CONNECT RED TO WHITE with any model in-wall timer and then turn on power or it can blow out the timer >>> I just did that while experimenting with the Utilitec 0192773.
Red wire goes to Load on all timers, except with Intermatic ST01C and EJ500
