Question about RTO Circuit Breaker Box For Electrical Power Generator

1 Answer

Breaker tripped, wouldn't reset. After about 20 minutes it reset.

The breaker that controls my living room and kitchen lights tripped. I went to reset it and it wouldnt. There was also a smell in the living room. So I looked around to try to isolate a short or some kind of problem. I had my wife switch the breaker again, so I could isolate the pop noise that she said she heard when I was trying, but when she tripped it back, this time it stayed? Am I in dander in the short term? What do I need to do here long term?

YES YOU ARE IN DANGER. DO NOT turn this breaker on again. Please get a registered electrician. There is a risk of fire or even explosion. BE CAREFUL. Have you got a smoke alarm?

How do I locate circuit breaker for kitchen power outlets

All houses have a fuze or breaker box. Check basement, closets, or utility room. Usually have a grey metal door. Find it and check if breaker is tripped or fuze is blown. If not the case there may be a GFCI outlet that is feeding those outlets that needs to be reset. They are usually a square outlet some have a light on them but all should have a reset button. If you find one to be tripped press the rest button in the middle of the outlet and you should be good to go.

I have a Challenger 15amp breaker that is carrying my tv, lights & phone in the living room and the microwave in the kitchen. It clicked off and will not stay on when I try to reset it. What do I do?

1) First of all, you are overamping that breaker.
Look at label on each appliance for watt rating.
1200 watt microwave, 120 volts draws 10 amps.
500 watt tv, 120 volts draws 4.1 amps.
15 amp breaker rated for 80% safe maximum is 12 amps
Do not install larger breaker without increasing size of wire.

2) Tripping breaker will not reset.
Jiggle breaker and see if there is crackling sound and check for burned smell.
Breaker might be bad. Move wire to another same-size breaker.

3) Other problem could be electrical short, caused by Melted wire, melted outlet, bad appliance, bad surge protector
Unplug everything and see if breaker rersets.
Check each outlet to determine which are out.
Inspect each outlet and switch for appearance of burning or small of burning.
Then plug each item in one at a time, and see what is tripping breaker.

I was cooking food for 1 minute and it just shut off after approx. 30 sec. There are no lights or power now. The outlet is fine. The unit is 4 yrs old.

Check your other appliance. You may have tripped a break. If they are all functioning, and you have no dead outlets in your kitchen, then the unit will need to be serviced. Hope it's the breaker.
a 1200w microware will draw 10 amps all by itself. Your outlets are most likely on 15 amp breakers, so it wouldn't take much amp draw from another kitchen appliance to trip the breaker.

LAst night we lost two rooms completely light and outlets. we try the reset the breaker nothing would come on. This morning we unplug everything turned on the breaker, and plug everything back in...

1) A circuit breaker will not reset if breaker is hot, or if there is a short to ground.

2) Hot breaker: If circuit is pulling more amps than the breaker rating, or if breaker is loose on the busbar, then breaker gets hot, and trips.
3) Volts x amps = watts. Add up wattage of everything on breaker and divide by 120Volts and that gives you amps.
If your breaker is 15 amps, the SAFE maximum is 80% or 12 amps.

4) If breaker is loose, you can smell burning and hear crackling sound. Jiggle the breaker around and listen for crackling.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-circuit-breaker.html

5) If there was a short somewhere on the breaker circuit, the breaker will trip.
When you unpluged each device and then the breaker was reset, then that says problem is probably NOT the wiring or breaker.
The problem was probably inside one of the devices that was plugged in.

6) If breaker trips again, unplug each device one at a time, and then try to reset breaker after each unplug to see if you can isolate suspected device.

Need to reset circuit breaker

Hi,

  • 1 Turn off the light switches and unplug appliances in the room that has lost power.
  • 2 Find your circuit breaker box and open the cover.
  • 3 Locate the tripped breaker. Circuit breakers are small, usually horizontal switches labeled by the areas of the house they serve (for example, "kitchen," "bathroom" and so on). The tripped circuit breaker will be in the "off" position or in a middle position between "on" and "off."
  • 4 Reset the breaker by moving it to the full "off" position and then back to "on." That may clear an overload and return power to the room. If the breaker re-trips, you may have too many lamps and appliances plugged into the circuit; a damaged cord or plug; a short circuit in a receptacle, switch or fixture; or faulty wiring.
  • 5 Identify and correct the malfunction before resetting the breaker.

  • Please post your feedback and Vote if the problem resolved as per your satisfaction.

    Whynter 13000 sno no power

Could be a lot of things - but I'm wondering if when you are checking the 'fuse at the plug-in,' are you actually checking the outlet for voltage?

I would check the outlet for voltage; i.e. plug in a hair dryer or something to the outlet and see if it (hair dryer) comes on. If it doesn't then I would check your breakers and see if you have a breaker tripped. In homes - you can usually go to your breaker panel (usually in the garage or a store room, i.e. pantry, hot water closet, sometimes in hallways behind doors) and find the breaker panel.

On a small unit like yours it would probably be a 15 or 20 amp single throw (like a light switch) breaker. If it's 'tripped' it can be in a position that resembles half on and half off, or it can look completely 'off.'

Remember - if it's a 'tripped breaker' - just re-setting the breaker might not solve the problem. There is usually a reason for a breaker tripping - although they do on occasion 'trip' for no reason.

In any event - if it's a tripped breaker - i would reset it and then if it happened again, either within a few minutes/or an hour - or within a day or two - then I would suspect something wrong with the unit and I would need more information, or you might need a qualified technician to trouble shoot the unit.

Note: if the breaker is tripped and when you reset it - it immediately 'pops back off.' Leave it off and call a tech - because you have a direct short and it will have to be trouble shooted.

    good luck!

Eaton Arc Fault Breaker type BRAF tripped. I reset it but lights will not work. Ideas please?

My arc fault breaker trips in my bedroom when ever a load is put on line. The trunk line comes into a three gang switch box and feeds the entire room. At times I can turn my ceiling fan and light on for 10 to 20 minutes before the breaker trips. Other times the breaker will trip when either switch is first turned on. I plugged a 4 watt night light in a wall receptical, without the ceiling light or fan on, it also trips the breaker. I have had other plug in lamps, 60 watt, work in other recepticals for a while. The problem seems to appear in all recepticals and lighting in the room.

30 is the correct size breaker for this unit. It sounds like there is a grounding issue going on in the system. Or off of the Thermostat. Something is grounding out causing the switch to trip. Are you running #10 wire to breaker and the unit? If not you will need to increase your wire size

    Blown breaker

It sound like all of those go through your bathroom GFCI. I would recommend moving your outdoor circuit breaker indoors if possible or enclosing it to make it water-proof. You may also do some rewiring from your main breaker box ( if you are handy) to eliminate the outdoor box completely considering you have 100 amp / 200 amp breaker box inside your house. If you still have an old FUSE BOX with 60 amp service, I would recommend replacing it with a 100 amp or 200 amp breaker box depending on the size of your house. I would separate the laundry room by itself with 12/2 gauge wire with ground on a 20 amp breaker. You can then take your bathroom (using 12/2 gauge wire with ground keeping your gfci ) and run it to another breaker in the house with a 20 amp breaker or add a new one if there is room in your main box. Now all you have left is the porch light. You can run that separate from everything to your main breaker box using 14/2 gauge with ground to a breaker in your main box by adding a new 15 amp breaker or adding it to another 15 amp breaker that does not have a very high load such as a bedroom. In general Kitchens, Bathrooms, Laundry rooms should be on there own separate 20 amp breakers. Most every other room can be 14/2 with ground on a 15 amp breaker... hope this helps....Joe
