Hi.

I understood that you want to disassemble a Garmin Nuvi, to repair the DC socket on the Sat Nav unit.

In that case you need to start undoing the screws hidden behind the antenna, at the back of the unit.

Here the complete step-by-step procedure.

Regards.

Will not turn on

Hi Larry -

Your Nuvi 765T should light up when you connect it to your computer's USB port. If it doesn't, there may be a problem with the USB port. Try connecting to the other USB ports on the computer (or a different computer - such as one at work, etc.) if needed. This will help rule out a defective USB port on the computer. You can also connect to a USB charger for another device that you may have instead. It may not charge with another product's USB charger if it provides a very low power output though. The auto plug will not charge the Nuvi when it gets into this condition. Even if it does not light up, leave it plugged into the USB charger / or port over night.

Check the GTM20 traffic receiver plug. It has two LEDs on the body. The one closest to the power cord end is the Traffic Reception Status light and the the one closest to the plug end is the Power light. If either of these lights is on when connected to the Nuvi, the fuse is good. If not not, you may need to change out the fuse in the FM traffic receiver plug. The plug powers both the traffic reciever and Nuvi. Carefully spin off the bright metal ring to disassemble the end to access the fuse. Replace if it is open / blown. If you need replacement parts, they can be purchased from Amazon for about $6.

After charging over night via charger or USB port, disconnect the nuvi from the power / USB cord and turn on by sliding AND holding the power switch in place to turn it on. Keep it held in position for 10 - 15 seconds before letting it slide back. During this time, the Nuvi should start up.

If it will not power up, the battery may be unable to accept a charge. You can replace the battery yourself, but it requires a steady hand, jewelers tools, good eye sight and patience from people selling parts to do this on eBay for as little as $6. Here's a link to those auctions.

If you'd prefer not to do the work yourself, a second option would be to let Garmin handle the "repair". Your 765T is likely out of warranty, and garmin offers a "flat rate repair" fee of $99. If you opt to do this, you will send your 765T to garmin and they will send you a different 765T that has been factory refurbished; complete with the most recent maps available already installed and a gaurantee good for 90 days. Not a bad deal when you consider the cost of upgrading just the maps one time on the 765T. You can start the process on garmin's site, linked here. I have used this service myself and was quite happy with it.

I hope this helps & good luck!

A family member gave my son a garmin nuvi 260 the cord was broken so i got another but when its plugged in to the car only get a computer connect pic and where is only when its unplugged can we get maps...

Sometimes this problem is caused by the power cord not being pushed fully into the back of the satnav even though it feels like it is. Pushing it in further usually solves the problem. If the power cord you're using is not a garmin this could also cause the problem.

My garmin won't work while the power cord is pluged in.It shows a picture of a computer and a garmin

Sometimes this is caused by wear in the mini USB socket that the power cord goes into. The plug appears to be in fully but it's not. Pushing it in further may solve the problem.

The power and mini USB connector on my Garmin Nuvi 200 has gotten loose and it will not hold the connection through the power cord without being held by hand. Is there a repair for this?

USB connectors are too fragile for the constant in-out service they get. But I have solved the "loose USB" problem, at least for standard Type A. The plug end (its steel case slips into the port end's steel case) is functionally female; it accepts the 4-pin tongue of the port and squeezes it between the 4-pin tongue of the plug end and the steel case of the plug end. So when the plastic tongues wear down, the squeeze isn't tight enough. Solution: take a small vise-grips and make the plug's steel case a little thinner, like a weight on a grilled cheese sandwich you're making. Then when you plug it in, it will resist a bit and feel tighter. And it will now work!

When I connect my Garmin Nuvi 200w to my car to charge it does not work. It just receive charge but does not work. If I disconnect it the GPS It work.

Are you using the garmin power cord or are you using an aftermarket cord? Some after market cords have usb plugs that although they plug right in to the power port on the unit, they tell the unit that you are updating the database. The unit displays only a picture of a computer connected to the unit and that's all it will do. Their is a way around this. Simply wait until the unit displays the about photo of the computer attached and then unplug the power cord from the unit. After the screen clears immediately replug in the power chord. This must be done quickly before anything appears on the screen. If you're too slow, simply repeat this step until you manage to replug the unit before anthing appears on the screen. Once plugged in as about the unit will operate normally on the external power source until you either turn it off or unplug it. Simple repeat above when ready to resume use.

When I plug in my vehicle power supply into my nuvi 250 gps, the computer symbol appears on the screen and my map will not return until I unplug the power source and turn on and off the gps unit. How do I...

This may be happening if you are connecting the GPS to the vehicle power source via USB cable, instead of the supplied power cord & cradle. If this is the case, try again not using the USB connection method.

Garmin nuvi won't turn on

folks, the garmins have an on-board battery that needs to be powered up (at least occasionally) via the usb port - like from your computer. just using the dc car power cord does nothing for this battery. i've had this exact same problem on both my 760 and 780 nuvi units. fixed it using the usb charge. seems to run down differently for all the various nuvi models. my regular charge will hold for 7 hours on my old 660, my 760 and 780 work about 5 hours. my 'power up' failed on the 660 after 10 months with no internal battery charge, but the 7xx models only took about 5-6 months to 'fail.' hope this helps. jack b :-) in midland, tx usa
