Scrambled picture & no sound on mini-dv tape

Hi,
A few months ago I recorded some important footage using my jvc digital camera onto two mini-dv tapes. I checked them after I shot and everything looked fine. Now I want to transfer the info on the tapes and after I tried to playback the tapes in my camcorder they were playing back a distorted image and there was no sound. One of the tapes was playing no image or sound back (but when I fast fowarded a bit I could see the image) at all & the other one almost had a split screen effect where half of the image was still and the other half was in motion also with no sound. Does anyone know what is causing this? Is this repairable? Most of what I recorded can be re-shot but a portion of it can't be and I would hate to lose it. I put in a new tape and recorded something and that playback was fine so I think it is the tapes. Thanks for any help you can give!

i have had the same problem as described above...i videotaped things...watched them and the picture and sound were fine...and now all the tapes have mosaic shaped distortion and the sound is all ruined...but if i tape something new then it would be fine....so either my video camera is ruining everything ?? or ;maybe my tapes would play in a different camera...all i know is i have about 20 mini dvs from my travels around the world that are all ruined...can you repair mini dvs??

Sounds like the same problem I got. How do you align the heads? Or is this something a tech needs to do?

I had the same problem with my JVC recorder...only ONE time so far on one of the most importants days :( Other tapes, new and old work fine. Okay, maybe the heads need to be aligned, but...can the tape with vertical pixelation and no sound that fastforwards w/out a pixelated appearance be salvaged?

Hi, forgive me if I'm telling you something you already know but if you shot video in DV mode then the iLink switch on the camera has to be set to DV. If you shot video in SD or HD mode then it must be set to MPEG2.

Does this cam, play the mini dv tapes????

If you are referring to the JVC GR-DVL520, yes it does play Mini DV tapes, as well as records to them. It will not play Mini DV tapes that were recorded on an HDV camera. HDV is used by any Mini DV camera that records HD video.

Accidently recorded over important material on a vhs tape. Is there anyway I can retrieve it??

I'm afraid not. When you record, the record heads automatically erase everything that was previously on that tape. So whatever footage was on that tape is gone for good. Sorry!

HVX200 shot footage - viewing footage on consumer grade camera

You can only view hd footage on hd devices. so if you recorded hd footage onto a tape, you will not be able to view it on a standard def camera, ie the dvx100b. The footage should not be harmed. Now if you are trying to view via p2 card over the firewire, whole new scenario.

Usually when the recording is started it takes around 10 to 15 seconds for the camera to recognise and display the duration of remaining tape, if you feel there is a problem, try using different brand tape.
