I think you should upgrade the firmware on your router.
After upgrading the firmware reset the router and reconfigure it manually.
I will also suggest you to create a new wireless network and use security modem WPA.
Try to connect to the new wireless network and see if that works.

If you can't figure out the security key then you can reset the router. There should be a small button probably inside a little hole on your router that says reset by it. Press that with something small like a paperclip and it will be set back to the default settings.

You can't bypass the security of the router. It's either you ask the owner for the security key or passphrase of the network or reset it, but if you do so you need to reconnect all computers connected to the router.

You will need to check the wireless settings of the router .
Is there any computer connected to the router with the Ethernet cable?
If not then connect 1 computer to the router and open the router set up page. Once you open the router set up page, you will be able to find the wireless network key.

Did you have the netgear before you bought the new laptop?
If so all you need is the wireless key - which you should have written down.
There is no need to set up the netgear again as it is already doing its job. You set up the computer to talk to the netgear.

connect the ethernet cable from dsl to router

configure router (on laptop) using supplied software and set security code

search for network on laptop and connect using security code

you do the security through the routers page, like if it's a linksys, it's 192.168.1.1, there you pull up the settings for the router, and under wireless set the type and the security code, you need to make all of them the sams type and code, like wep1, then, 1234567890, that's it, good luck
