SOURCE: #1508 Bad directory buffer signature

Hi, if this is a fairly new installed XP you're probably better off: repartitioning, reformat and reinstall WinXP but this will delete all contents of the hard drive. If however there are a good number of critical/important files you would want to save/copy, there are two (2) ways of going about saving/copying those files but both involve access to a working computer. (1) remove your Travelstar 5K100 from the laptop and using a 44 to 40 pin adaptor, connect it to the working pc which should recognize it as another hd and therefore you can copy your files to that pc. There are many sites that explains how to do this. You can try Google search or http://search.techrepublic.com.com/search/laptop+hard+drive.html. (2) another method is to boot and run your OS from your cd. While this does not involve physically removing your laptop's hard disk, it might be a bit challenging preparing the bootable CD with an OS. The procedure is better explained at http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/. This will run your laptop although a bit slow however, you can access the hd and save it to a thumbdrive or if you have a lan to another computer. Please let me know if this works ok with you. Good luck and regards.

What format should I chose to grab it to a PC?

This will depend on which type of computer and operating system you have
if you are referring to formatting your hard drive to a specific format file system NTFS or FAT choose the Ntsf file system is more secure Ntfs is more powerful than Fat or Fat32 and includes features required for hosting Directory as well as other important security features . You can use features such as Active Directory and Domain - based security only by choosing Ntfs your file system Its easy to convert Partitions to Ntfs . The set up programs conversion makes it easy whether your partitions used Fat or Fat32 or the older version of Ntfs .This kind of conversion keeps your files intact (unlike formatting a partition). If you do not need to keep your files intact and you have a FAT or FAT32 partition, it is recommended that you format the partition with NTFS rather than convert from FAT or FAT32. Formatting a partition erases all data on the partition and allows you to start with a clean drive.

hope this helps you

I have a simpletech and i want to copy some files from mac to simpletech - it doesn't work - doesn't let me copy anything and doesn't send me any message - what should i do?

It could be a couple issues. The Signature Mini ships with FAT32, and the file size limitation is 4GB, so if you are trying to copy files larger than this, it could be an issue. Another possibility is that the drive is formatted NTFS, which the Mac can read OK, but cannot write to it. If you want to use the drive cross-platform, then you might want to set it up for cross-platform use. p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal { margin: 0in 0in 0.0001pt; font-size: 12pt; font-family: "Times New Roman"; }div.Section1 { page: Section1; } To format the drive for cross-platform use, make sure that you have backed up all your data from the drive as formatting will destroy any data on the drive. First, connect the drive to your Mac, and open Disk Utility. Then select your drive on the left side of the window and choose the Partition Tab. Then change the Current Partition drop-down menu to 1 partition and click on the Options button. A new window will appear where you will choose Master Boot Record (MBR), then click OK. Then choose Free Space from the Format drop-down menu, click Apply, then OK. Your drive will now appear unformatted. Then choose the Erase tab, choose FAT32 as the Format, name your drive (you will be limited to 11 characters), and click Erase, then OK. Your drive will then appear on the desktop formatted for cross-platform use, and you can copy the data you need to move to your PC and then connect the drive to your PC.

What is the difference between ntfs & fat

This are the difference between the two.

File Allocation Table (FAT): A file system used by MS-DOS and other Windows-based operating systems to organize and manage files. The file allocation table (FAT) is a data structure that Windows creates when you format a volume by using the FAT or FAT32 file systems. Windows stores information about each file in the FAT so that it can retrieve the file later.

NTFS: An advanced file system that provides performance, security, reliability, and advanced features that are not found in any version of FAT. For example, NTFS guarantees volume consistency by using standard transaction logging and recovery techniques. If a system fails, NTFS uses its log file and checkpoint information to restore the consistency of the file system. In Windows 2000 and Windows XP, NTFS also provides advanced features such as file and folder permissions, encryption, disk quotas, and compression.

In windows, right click on drive letter, choose format.

Raw file system

To fix the problem
Disable the S.M.A.R.T error detection feature in the CPUCool program or similar utility.
Boot to the Windows 2000 or XP installation CD, and at the Startup menu, press R for repair.
In the Recovery Console, type the following:
chkdsk /p
When the CHKDSK process has finished, reboot the computer.
Run the program again.
The error should no longer be reported unless you start using the S.M.A.R.T error detection feature again.

Error occurs with PartitionMagic 8.0
If you encounter Error 1516 with PartitionMagic 8, first run CHKDSK /F on the affected partition. For instructions on how to run CHKDSK, read How to Run Microsoft's CHKDSK from the Command Line. If this does not fix the error, try running PartitionMagic with the /IFC switch, which causes file system errors to be ignored.
To run PartitionMagic with the /IFC switch
Boot from the first PartitionMagic rescue disk.
When you are prompted to insert the second rescue disk, press Ctrl+C to drop to the command (A:>) prompt.
Insert the second PartitionMagic rescue disk and type the following:
pqmagic /ifc
Press Enter.
please go ahead and try the above steps may be it will fix it

Installing two hdd maxtor 80gb wd2500, installed win pro on 80gb went fine but keeps telling me that second hdd drive D needs to be formatted, but when i do, it tells me cannot format drive D

you will need to use a disk utility to partition the drive first...
Partitioning and Formatting a Second drive in Windows 2000/XP
To partition and format new hard disk in a Windows XP
/2000 system, right click on 'my computer' and select 'manage.' Once you are in the management screen, select 'disk management'.
A screen showing your existing drives, including the new one, will appear. At this point Windows should open a wizard to help you partition and format your new drive. If it does not, right click the new drive in the lower pane and select 'initialize drive.'
Now you must partition the drive. To do this, right click on the new drive and select 'new partition' to launch the partition wizard. It will then prompt you for how much drive space you wish to allocate to the new partition. If you opt not to use the full amount of space for the first partition, you can create additional ones in the same way up to a maximum of four partitions per disk. You will then be asked for a drive letter which Windows will use to represent the partition you just created.
Note that if you are using the NTFS file system
on your main hard drive (the default with Windows 2000 and XP Professional) you will also have the option to mount your newly created partition as a directory in another volume. This adds the entire space of your new partition to that one directory, so any files placed in that directory will reside in the fresh partition but no new drive letter is created. Essentially you are using your new partition to expand the space available on another partition. Click no to this option (unless this is what you want to do).

Once you have chosen a drive letter or directory, you will be prompted to format the drive. Generally it's best to format with the NTFS file system at this point, unless the PC uses an earlier Windows operating system
like Windows 98. If that is the case, you will need to format the drive in FAT32 if Win98SE is to access to the data on the new hard drive. Once formatting is complete, your drive is ready for use.
Regards and Tahnk you for using Fixya.. Please rate!

How do i use ubuntu fixing ntfs file system?

Use apt-get from the terminal to install the ntfsprogs package - sudo apt-get install ntfsprogs

Then you can use the tool ntfsfix from the terminal to attempt to repair a ntfs partition.

Example:
* unmount the drive if it's mounted already
sudo umount /dev/sda1 - read below for device naming info
then type: sudo ntfsfix /dev/sda1

Note:
A typical home pc or laptop has 2 or 4 IDE channels as follows:
  • ide0 = primary
  • ide1 = secondary
  • ide2 = tertiary
  • ide3 = quaternary
For example:
  • ide0 = primary master = hda
  • ide1 = primary slave = hdb
  • ide2 = secondary master = hdc
  • ide3 = secondary slave = hdd
  • sata0 = 1st sata device = sda
  • sata1 = 2nd sata device = sdb
and so on...
SCSI & SATA devices are listed as devices sda, sdb, sdc, sdd, sde, sdf, etc. in the /dev directory. Similarly, partitions on these disks can range from 1 to 16 and are also in the /dev directory.
Now each hard drive has 4 primary partitions (limit of PC x86 architecture). First partition is denoted by number 1. For example:
  • First partition : /dev/hda1
  • Second partition : /dev/hda2
  • Third partition : /dev/hda3
  • Fourth partition : /dev/hda4
  • sata0 device, 1st partition: /dev/sda1
  • sata1 device, 1st partition: /dev/sdb1
And so on.
You can run command fdisk -l (lowercase L) to display a list of partitions:

WARNING! These examples may result in data loss. Use fdisk command with caution as it can manipulate / overwrite your partition table.
