I need a top end ovrhaul kit, piston jug rings gasket, preferably aftermarket due to cost for a ms 290 stihl

    repairing for a tight wod friend and the jug is also damaged, is a ms290 the same parts as a later 290

    I thought about what you propose. Do you have a Home Depot Tool Rental near you? They sell their used Makita (Dolmar) 6401s periodically. They usually go for $200 - 300. 6400 specifications For about the price of a P&C for a home owner grade Stihl you can have a professional grade saw. The right P&C for the Makita can turn it into a 7900. Part out the Stihl on eBay and you can probably recover the initial investment in the Makita. If my Husky 359 needed an infusion of significant cash, I would seriously consider replacing it with one of these saws. More saw, less weight, cheaper, hmm, hmm. These have been used. There may be cosmetic blemishes. They may need mechanical repair, they may not. Lou

    We have never seen any after market kits for Stihl. I would purchase right from Stihl, you may pay a little more, but you will bw much happier with the results.

    Thanks Jerry; Stihl is not my cup of tea. Bailey's has an aftermarket P & C but they upgrade to a 390. More power about the same weight. But it is about $270 Add in shipping and your time you are approaching new 290 cost. Contact your local Stihl dealer. Just to see what parts would be through them. If you get a current cost would you please post back just to satify my curiosity. TIA Lou

    hello w. i was just wondering why do you want to put after market parts in a top of the line saw,if you plan to keep for a while the cost can't be that much different. when i rebuilt my saw the parts only cost $60.00,that was for a piston ,rings,gasket and carb kit.jug was fine, dontbother will be able to tell you what is best,good luck.

You are looking at approx----300 for the cylinder and about 125 for the top end kit which includes the piston --rings-- and gaskets.

It seems that YES a 56mm aftermarket cylinder is available for the Stihl 064. Looking at the kit you need to just replace Cylinder, Piston and rings, bearing bush and clips. Worth also replacing the base gasket too.

You did not indicate whether or not you have compression now that you have changed out the gaskets and piston rings. If not, it seems to me that the problem could be a) cracked head or block, b) bad valve(s) or even c) a warped head.

I own a 2004 jetta gli. 2 piston stopped working. When changing the sparkplugs noted oil on of them. Pistons 1 and 4 still not working.


Yes this is a major problem. What I mean by that is, when ever you pull a plug and there is heavy oil on them, it comes from only two places. Head gasket seal is leaking where it comes down and seeps on to your plugs or your rings gasket is shot, so the oil is getting past your rings and getting on your plugs. Point is this, sense you have pistons that stopped working, you for sure need a ring job, and looks like a piston/ring job, this I hate to say it is a top engine rebuild. Point is, you can't just fix part, it is not going to work for longevity. You would need at least the top end rebuilt, that is where they bore out chambers, new pistons, rings, head gasket and so forth. This can be costly, guess on average top end rebuild can run at average shop 1,500 plus. For sure get at least 3 prices if you decide to have it done. Sometimes your better to get a new rebuild and have it put in, with your engine as part trade for new rebuild. Because normally, if you rebuild top end and not the bottom, then that is on borrowed time. I hate to give the bad news, but that is where it looks like what you need. Mike

It realy depends on how much oil is around the piston, and in the bore, however you should be getting over 100 psi

I need instructions and parts list for a seized stihl MS170 as the shop says it is not worth repairing

if it's seized, first off, take out the spark plug and pour a little diesel in it. You can get away with wd-40 too, but diesel works best. You'll want to let it sit this way for a couple of days. Next, you can try to tap the piston lightly with a plastic punch and a dead blow hammer. If it won't go, don't hit it too hard; you'll put a hole in it. If you haven't broken it loose by now, you may have to use the grease gun method. This is where you modify an old spark plug to attach to a grease fitting, screw it in, and pump it full of grease to use the hydraulic pressure to push the piston out. You'll want to unbolt the cylinder for this part. Once you get the piston out, look at the cylinder bore. If it's scored deeply, you'll want to get a new cylinder. If not, you can usually just hone it to get light scratches out, and put in a piston kit. As for cost effectiveness, your shop is right though. You can usually find a decent running used ms 170 for less than the parts you'll need to rebuild this one, especially if you're dealing with a seizure. If it seized due to oil mixture issues, you have no idea what kind of shape the rest of the bearings in the engine are in, and you're piston kit may be great, but you toast a bearing a week down the road. Piston kit runs about 30 dollars includes a piston, rings, wristpin, and clips, and you'll need a gasket kit as well. Another Option, is to find a shortblock, even used, and put rings in it just to play it safe. Hope this helps you out.
